Last Friday, Judge Jean Wetenkamp was assigned to the trial.

Judge Wetenkamp started the trial this morning. The schedule was discussed, and she accepted written prosecution and defense pretrial motions. She will look at them the rest of today, and tomorrow morning at 9 am she will meet again (in open court) to discuss the motions further. She has allowed Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (January 14, 15, and 16) to resolve the motions.

Judge Wetenkamp is going on vacation starting January 19 and will return on January 28.  Jury selection is expected to begin on January 29. Jury selection could take as little as two days and as much as four. If jury selection is completed in two days, Opening Statements would start on Monday, February 2. If jury selection is not complete, opening statements will be delayed.

The prosecutor expects to take 5 days to present his witnesses (week of February 2), and the defense expects to take 1 day (February 9). Working out jury instructions will take one day and Closing Arguments at the earliest could begin on February 11.

The jury was seated a couple of hours ago... I was a prosepctive juror. Prior to walking into Dept. 36 of the Superior Court on Monday to serve my jury duty, I had no knowledge of Mary Quigley, or that I was about to spend the next two days in the same courtroom with the man accused of perpretrating this horrific crime. (Ordered to stay away from the news until excused), I just had the opportunity to read about Mary Quigley and am touched by her short-life and that her memory lives on through this tribute page and other blogs. I am extremely grateful that justice is finally going to be served! Prospective jurors were advised that DNA and the '79 rape conviction are going to be introduced during trial. I must say as much as I tryed to stay impartial (as ordered by the court) it was nearly impossible to look at the sad, little, balding man w the "jacked-up" eye sitting in-front of me and not see him for the vile monster that he is. I feel very confident of the jury that was selected, that they will do their job well, (as will the prosecutor)and am extremely hopeful that long overdue justice for Ms. Quigley, her friends and her family will finally be served. The judge expected the case to be completed by the end of February. God bless
