Petition To Change War Memorial Playground
To
Mary Quigley Memorial Playground
Mary's Page
We are asking for everyone's support for the name change. It is very important to us to have the park named Mary Quigley
Memorial Playground instead of War Memorial Playground for many reasons. The first being it would be a wonderful way of
memorializing Mary's memory. She was a beautiful young woman who lost her life tragically in the same location as the new
playground is being built. It seems more appropriate to have a playground named after a person than to have it named after a
war. When the children are playing at Mary Quigley Memorial Park and ask, Who is Mary Quigley? it will be a great way
for parent's to tell her story and also a way to help teach their children about the real danger they face in this world. I understand
the Parks and Recreation Committee want to pay tribute to the Veterans and we respect that, however there is already a very beautiful War Memorial at
Central Park and many celebrations in their honor.
The site where the park is to be built has been a vacant lot for over 25 years. The city gardeners would use this lot to dump
excess dirt and grass clippings in. So it's not like we are asking for a War Memorial to be taken away from the residents of
Santa Clara or our War Veterans. I have several War Veterans in my family who stand beside us and are in full favor of our request.
The only thing that has remained exactly the same about the area over the last 30 years is the fence where Mary's killer decided
to hang her from for some sick reason. The Santa Clara Police Department cut out a section from the fence where her belt strap
held her up and eventually strangled her. DON'T let that hole in the fence be her memorial. Let's get the area named after Mary
Quigley. Let's do something beautiful in her memorylets do it for her, her family and friends, and for the children who will
benefit!
