Biarni & Rianth

"Biarni, I um... I have something to tell you..." Biarni raised an eyebrow at A'serin. "And it's not easy, because I don't really want to say it but..."

"Well go on and say it then," Biarni told him, knowing what was coming but prepared for it nonetheless. "You should know by now I don't bite."

A'serin smiled and toyed with a strand of Biarni's hair that had escaped. "Oh, I don't mind when you bite. But it's just... it's Rianth. She hates Tebarith and well he's lonely having to be alone and there's a very nice green he's had his eye on and her rider is nothing, I mean she's nothing compared to you and you don't know how much I hate doing this but for Tebarith's sake I have to."

Biarni smiled reassuringly, though she wanted to scream. Not at A'serin, but at her dragon. This was the fifth weyrmate she'd lost because he was a brownrider. "Don't worry, I understand. Tebarith should come first, and I know Rianth can be hard to live with if you happen to be a brown."

A'serin looked like he'd collapse from releif, instead he kissed her lightly on the forehead. "Faranth Biarni, do you know how amazing you are?"

"Of course I do," Biarni replied with a smile. "We can still be friends, so long as you don't mind if my dragon insults yours every other word."

"I don't mind, so long as Tebarith doesn't hear any of it," A'serin chuckled. He gave her a quick squeeze and then was called away by a woman who she guessed was the green's rider.

Biarni watched him go. Why do you always have to go and loose me every guy I find, Rianth? She demanded as she started back for her weyr.

Because you only find men who aren't good enough for you, Rianth told her as if it should have been incredibly obvious.

Why? Because they happened to have Impressed browns? Biarni demanded, flopping down on her bed. I swear Ri, at this rate I'll never find a weyrmate that lasts!

Well of course not, if you keep choosing the kind of men you do! Rianth sighed. And stop acting like it's only your problem! I don't have a mate either!

Well you could have had one in Tebarith if you'd let him! Biarni reminded her.

I am not desperate enough to twine necks with a brown, Rianth scoffed. I don't see why you share a bed with a man who ride's one. He wasn't good enough for you.

Well who is good enough? Biarni sighed exasperatedly. You can't hope for a bronze mate, you're too small. Sorry dearest, but browns and blues are your best bets.

What about other rares? the white-silver asked. There're plenty of them out there, you know. I was Hatched in a whole clutch of them.

Ri, then what's wrong with that bronze-copper or the cream-brown from your clutch who are right here at Quinalt? Or that night brown? Or Luath? Biarni asked.

I don't know, I just... I could have any of them, but what if I rose, and somehow a brown caught me, even if perfectly acceptable rares were chasing me? Rianth gave a shudder at the thought.

We can worry about you rising when you do, we can even make it a rares only flight, if you want, Biarni assured her. But I don't want to have to pick my weyrmate by the color of his dragon!

Well I heard from Auresanth, that the weyr where she was Hatched was having another clutch like hers... Ryslen, that was it. They're having another Flurry. Only rares allowed, you know, she suggested.

And let me guess, you know that any of those males will be worthy of you? Biarni sighed.

And if we leave now, there'll be plenty of time for you to get to know their riders, Rianth told her.
