| The Kingdom of Tonga (or Friendly Islands) is an archipelago situated in the southern Pacific Ocean south of Samoa and east of Fiji comprising of 150 islands. Primarily agricultural, the kingdom exports bananas and copra. Tonga became a self- governing protectorate of Great Britain in 1900 and a fully independent state on June 4, 1970. The monarchy is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. The monarch is Chief of State and Head of Government. Nuku'alofa is the capital. |
