It lies about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) southeast of Australia and about 6,500 miles (10,500 kilometers) southwest of the state of California. New Zealand belongs to a large island group called Polynesia. The country consists of 2 islands - the North Island and the South Island - and several dozen much smaller islands.
