Libya is an independent Arab country on the northern coast of Africa. It is bigger than any state in the US, but has only about as many people as South Carolina. The Sahara covers over 90 per cent of Libya. Until the 1960's, Libya was a poor country, largely because natural resources were scarce. But the discovery of oil in 1959 brought the country unexpected wealth. Tripoli is the capital of Libya.
