| Israel is a small nation on the eastern shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It was founded in 1948 as a homeland for Jews from all parts of the world. Most of the people of Israel are Jews, about half of whom were born in other countries. Nearly all the other Israelis are Arabs. Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and Tel-Aviv is the largest city. Israel makes up most of the region once called Palestine, the Holy Land of the Bible. |
