Text Box: Etiquette

A French Bowling journal “La France Bouliste”, quoted by Paul Garcin, in his “Le Jeu de Boulles”, gives the following advice:-
“Be correct on the bowling green.
Be scrupulously punctual.
Respect the Rules.
Respect the instructions given to you.
Respect the decicions of the Umpire.
Be polite to your opponents.
Be careful of your language.
Be careful of your demeanour.
Say little.
Obey your Skip.
Control your joy when you win.
Be able to “take it” when you lose.
Be a man and behave like one.
Be convinced that you have carried off the best of victories if your opponent of today becomes your friend of tomorrow.”

Text Box: Bowling Etiquette
Good sportsmanship in bowls is based simply on the practice of good old-fashioned etiquette, “the unwritten or conventional laws of courtesy observed between the players”. The etiquette of the game is thus concerned with preserving the essential spirit and character of the sport and the fellowship which is bowls.

Are you guilty??

·While play is in progress it is bad form to carry on a conversation from the green with someone on the bank.
·When crossing over from the mat to the head be careful to confine yourself to your rink and not to trespass into the adjoining rinks.
·Do not grumble if your opponent gets a good result through a fluke, KEEP QUIET.
·Do not say “well played” if your team gets a fluke. Once again, KEEP QUIET.
·If the Umpire is called in to measure, ALL players must leave the head and await the Umpires decision which is final.
·Do not argue with the skip about the shot he asks you to play. Not only is it bad etiquette, but your hesitation shows a lack of confidence in his tactical ability and this can affect team harmony.
·It is certainly not etiquette on the part of the lead or second to offer advice to the third or skip. There is nothing worse than to see a lead or second signalling to the skip behind the third’s back.
