| Betty Tyson | |||||||
| Betty Tyson was a prostitute and a drug addict. About 25 years ago she was convicted for a murder that she had never done. On May25th 1973 someone in New York was walking in the street and saw a dead body. The victim was a 52 year old business man. He had been beaten up with bricks and choked with his tie. They also found traces of sperm and tyres on him. The tyres matched Betty Tyson's car and so they arrested her. The police's reasoning is simple: Two withness admit seeing Betty with the man and Betty is the only prostitute in the neighborhood with a car. So two withnesses, Betty's tyres....for the police, Betty is guilty. Now lets' look at the problems of this case: The two teenagers that testyfied against Betty were incarcerated for six months with no reason what so ever until the beginning of the trial. Also there was no physical proof that Betty was at the scene of the crime. No hair, no finger prints no nothing. And for the specialised laboratory that was in charge of the case there wasn't any real proof that Betty's tyres really matched the tyre traces that they found on the man. Finnaly during the trial, three person testyfied that Betty was with them the night of the murder. But the jury didn't believe them so Betty was judged guilty for a sentence of 25 years. In 1980, detective Mahoney who was in charge of the case was judged guilty for falsifying documnets in a mob case. In 1997 the two teenagers that testyfied against Betty admitted that they lied because detective Malhoney threatened them with a gun. So the lawyer John Getz decided de re-open the case. Mr. Getz and his team finally found a document that was hidden for about 20 years. It was a declaration from one of the teen withness saying that he never saw Betty Tyson with the man. This becomes the key that sets Betty free afetr 25 years!! Now Betty is with her family. Also, even if this was a horrible experience, it's probably what saved her life. The purpose of this story is to tell you that the bad things that God gives you are most of the time, even always a blessing. Look at Betty now: Before she was incarcerated she was a prostitute and a drug addict. When she was in prison she learned and finished her High school degree and got over her drug addiction. She started fighting for a wonderful cause; prisonners who have AIDS and need treatment! And when she got out of prison, the government gave her 1 million dollars for compensation. Now she's not a drug addict anymore, she still fights for a good cause, she finished High school and she's a millionaire! God knows what would of happened to her in the streets 25 years ago. I'm not even sure she would of made it! So if there's something bad happening to you, think about this story and remember that God doesn't do things for nothing. Believe that bad things are always good things! |
