[ The wearing of vintage clothing ] inserts its wearer into a complex
network of of cultural and historical references... by putting quotation
marks around tthe garments it revitalizes, it makes clear that the past
is available to us only in a textual form, and through the mediation of
the present... It is thus a highly visible way of acknowledging that its
wearer's identity has been shaped by decades of reprensetational activity,
and that no cultural project can ever "start from zero".
