Cartmill Cup Final

Hat-Trick For O'Kane

Quigleys Point 3 V 1 Fanad United

In the Cartmill Cup final at Maginn Park, Buncrana, on Sunday, Quigleys Point were dominant in midfield and up front Fanad United had nobody to match the speed and thrust of centre-forward Mickey O'Kane, who led their defence a merry dance and helped himself to a hat-trick.

O'Kane raced clear to put Swifts ahead in the 5th minute. A minute later he almost added another when his fierce shot on the run was touched over by Coyle. Fanad went close after 25 minutes, Michael McNally shooting narrowly over the bar following a fine run and cross by Shaun McIvor.

Five minutes later they should have equalised when Joe Doherty headed on a Frank Doherty cross and Martin Doherty's shot from six yards was saved easily by Sean McColgan. Just when Fanad looked like getting back into the game their vulnerability to the long ball down the middle was exposed and O'Kane outpaced the defence to score number two.

Fanad hopes nose-dived two minutes after the interval. O'Kane, completely unmarked, crashed the ball home off the inside of the crossbar to complete his hat-trick.

Fanad rallied bravely and after John Doherty's effort had been brilliantly saved by Seam McColgan at the expense of a corner, Andy Griffen found the net with a well-placed shot. John Sharkey next split the Point defence with a great ball to Martin Doherty but the Fanad winger blazed wildly over the bar.

Serious troubled loomed ahead for the Point when Dan McColgan handled in the area, but Andy Griffen's spotkick went wide of the post.

Towards the end Quigleys Point again took control and coyle made several good saves to keep them at bay.

Anthony McColgan, Liam McDermott and Mickey O'Kane were outstanding for the Swifts, while best fof Fanad were Sean McIvor, Michael McNally and Eugene Gillespie.

If Quigleys Point Swifts defeat Culdaff in the Top Four Final on Sunday they will have made a clean sweep of all the major competitions in Inishowen football and crowned the most successful season in their history. They have already won the 1st Division Championship, The McIvor Cup and (last Sunday at the expense of Fanad United) The Cartmill Cup.

Culdaff 3 v 2 Quigleys Point Swifts
There will be no Grand Slam in Inishowen after all. The great bid by Quigleys Point to win all the peninsula's main trophies ended on Sunday last with a Top Four Final defeat by their most persistant, rivals, Culdaff. 1
