Swifts Take Bull Park Sevens

One of the biggest crowds ever seen at a summer football competition in Derry was at Bull Park last thursday night for the fnal of the Bull Park Sevens tournament, which was won by local side Celtic Swifts. They defeated Quigleys Point 3-2 in a game which kept the fans entertained throughout. It was a victory which Swifts thoroughly deserved although, in the dying minutes, they had a few anxious moments as the Inishowen side fought all out for the equaliser.

The game started very tentatively with both sides testing each other out. Then in the 15th minute, Seamus McDowell opened the scoring for Celtic Swifts and form then untill the end of the first half the Derry team dominated and could easily have scored another couple of goals.

The match came to life in the second half as Quigleys Point came more into the game, only to be denied by Celtics keeper Denis Feeney. On one occasion he dived full stretch across his goal to keep out a well guided header from Vincent McColgan, and from this attack Celtic broke away and scored through John Flemming. Mickey O'Kane Immediately with an outstanding volley from 20 yards to make the score 3-1 and with 6 minutes remaining Quigleys Point scored again through Anthony McColgan to narrow the deficit to just one goal.

However they could not add another and Celtic Swifts Lifted the Bull Park cup for the second year in sucession. The match was well refereed by J.McCauley who was ably assisted by linesmen Matt Morrison and Sammy Brown.

Best for Swifts were John Fleming, Roy McGreadie and Thomas Healy while the Quigleys Point stars were Liam McDermott, Vincent McColgan and Mickey O'Kane.

The Charles Hegarty Memorial Silver Plate went to Liam McDermott who narrowly pipped Roy McCreadie for the Man of The Match award. The plate was presentated by Mr. Noel Heagarty.
