Q.P.S..............3
Letterkenny Rvrs...1
THREE goals within the first 25 minutes was enough to bring the Ulster Cup to Quigley's Point. The Inishowen champions turned in a determined display at a wet and windy Maginn Park, Buncrana, on Wednesday to beat Letterkenny Rovers 3-1.

Quigley's Point Swifts, who on Wednesday defeated a Letterkenny Rovers side by three goals to one in the final of the Antifire Cup competition at Buncrana.

Playing with the wind on their backs in the first half, the Inishowen men got of to a flying start with a goal after 12 minutes. The Letterkenny defence was caught on the hop when Neil McColgan sent a cross into a crowded goalmouth. In the scramble that followed the same player found the ball at his feet and sent home a low shot from close range on the left wing. Four minutes later, QPS had the ball in the Letterkenny net again.

A sluggish Letterkenny defence was slow off the mark when Vincent McColgan collected a through ball inside the box and the QPS captain scored woth a low shot. A rout now seamed on the cards and almost became a reality in the 23rd minute when the brilliant Michael O'Kane scored the goal of the game. A long clearance from defender Laurence McColgan found the forward lying unmarked outside Letterkenny's area. Taking his chance superbly, O'Kane sent in a low shot from the edge of the box, beating Letterkenny's keeper, James Cunningham, all the way.

Ten minutes into the game, Letterkenny lost Vincent Furey when he was injured in a clash with QPS defender, Gerry Magee. Michael Duffy replaced him.

Three goals down Letterkenny turned in a great 20 minutes before the interval in an attempt to reduce the deficit. But their lack of a striker was painfully obvious on several occasions, with superb teamwork, finished and wasted oppertunities. In the 30th min Jimmy Kennedy completed a powerful solo run, in which he beat 3 QPS defenders, with a perfect pass to the unmarked Liam Collins on the right inside the box. A goal seemed certain but the Letterkenny wingernotched it up with a hurried drive over the bar. The same player hit the side netting earlier from close range and was guilty of missing another two chances in the first half. One came in the opening minute when he collected a left wing cross from Vincent Furey but shot over the bar under pressure from the QPS defenders.

At this stage, Quigley's Point were reduced to depending on breaks, but despite the good work of their number 8 Anthony McColgan and Michael O'Kane the Letterkenny defence had settled down inot a tight barrier and chance were few and far between. O'Kane, however, always looked dangerousand on several occasions left his marker, E. Margey, standing.

Only Goal Too Late

Letterkenny's only goal of the game proved to arrive too late, 16mins into the second half. Denis Doherty playing upfront was the scorer. A bad back pass by a defender came off the outstreched QPS keeper just inside the box, and Doherty was on hand to collect the loose ball and no problems sending it into the net. Letterkenny, desperate for a goal, went on the attack, but it was the same story of good approach work and poor finishing. Forced into defence QPS showed all the determination which has brought them so many awards in the past.

All in all, it was a good game which QPS won with the aid of two soft goals and steely determination, and which Letterkenny lost through the absense of a goal scorer and an unsettled defence early in the first half.

After the game Michael O'Kane was rightly presented with the Man-of-the-Match award. For Letterkenny it was a good all-round performance with Jimmy Kennedy featuring strongly throughout.
