Educational Philosophy
Education is a process in which students are taught to learn. I believe that in teaching students to learn, a teacher should provide them with critical thinking skills that will help in their construction of knowledge. Students need to be in an environment where they are encouraged to think.  It is the role of a teacher not to force students to learn, but to make them want to learn. I believe that as a teacher, you cannot only impart your knowledge unto a student; but should allow students express their knowledge of what they have learned. As Roger Lewin states, Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve. Teachers must continually question their students in order to make sure they understand the material; because true learning only begins when a student can apply what they have learned to other concepts in school and life.

I believe that a teacher must provide learning opportunities that support students intellectual, social and interpersonal development. By having a clear understanding of a students development, a teacher can respond to them individually. It is a teachers role to recognize each student as an individual. With this in mind, as a teacher I would create opportunities that are effective for diverse learners. I believe by using multiple methods of teaching, I can maximize the number of students that understand the material. The feedback that I would get through questioning students can help me to enhance my teaching strategies. By realizing what the students understand, a teacher can prepare a more effective curriculum.

I believe that respect is a powerful management tool in a classroom.  It is important for teachers and students to have mutual respect for each other, but it is more important for each student to have respect for their peers.  I believe that the classroom should be a place where students are able to express themselves or their opinions, without fear of ridicule by other students or the teacher. It becomes easier for a student to learn when they feel free to express themselves. I also believe that a teacher must do more than just teach, they have to act as a mentor to the students, and help them to find directions in their studies and thoughts.

The ultimate purpose of education is to make the knowledge that you teach a life long experience. Learning is infinite and it is important for teachers to prepare students for that journey.
