Princess Zelda is in a deep sleep, placed there by an evil scorcerer. The only way for Link to reach the sorcerer (which escaped to the Great Palace, which is in great ruins) is by collecting the pieces of the Magic Crystal. And as any good ending, Link finds all the pieces and rescues Princess Zelda.
