PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

My Very Dear Queens Villagers,

This Memorial Day, let us not forget our Veterans.  Their sacrifices and dedicated service are the foundation of our freedoms.   Remember them in your thoughts and prayers, and, if possible, take time out to visit Veterans Plaza, at Springfield Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue, on Monday, May 27, at 11:00 A. M., for services there to honor them.

I am working on getting a representative from the Department of Sanitation to address us regarding the enforcement of the Sanitation Code as emphasized by Mayor Bloomberg.  I hope that person will be at this month's meeting.

You are cordially invited to attend our Annual Dinner and Installation of Officers Ceremony on Tuesday, June 18, at 7:30 P. M., in Stewart Hall at Our lady of Lourdes Church.  This is your opportunity to support our civic and at the same time have an evening of good food and good company.  Tickets are $10.00 per person and can be purchased at this month's meeting.

Warm and hot days of spring and summer often trigger loud and long parties.  Call the 105th Precinct at 776-9090 or the Quality of Life Hotline, 1-888-677-5453,  to combat such noise pollution.  You will get action.

The very nature of Queens Village is being violated by some of our homeowners who are concreting over what was once their front yard.   Also, unnecessary large brick and iron fences are being installed to enclose properties.   Such construction diminishes the character and the beautiful natural environs of our community.   We are asking residents not to make such changes to their homes.

Congratulations to Mohammed Sadiq, our Recording Secretary, on his appointment to Community Board 13.   Also to the Creedmoor Civic Association on their 75th Anniversary.

Enjoy the warmth and the flowering of late spring.   I hope to see you on May 21.

Best regards,

NEW ANTI-GUN INITIATIVE PAYS CASH FOR LETHAL WEAPONS

As part of an ongoing effort to take guns off our streets, Mayor Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Kelly have announced this month that the NYPD will pay $100.00 for the surrender of any working handgun, sawed-off shotgun, or assault weapon, as part of the new 2002 citywide "Cash for Guns" program.   Anyone who delivers a gun will remain anonymous and will not be questioned. Guns can be surrendered 24 hours a day at any Police Precinct, Housing Police Service Area, or Transit District.   Anyone who is uncomfortable delivering a gun to a police station should call a local precinct and make arrangements for it to be picked up.   The 2002 "Cash for Guns" program is scheduled to run for 30 days, but may be extended.   Guns delivered to precincts must be unloaded and sealed in a bag.   This program recognizes that we can always do more to prevent violence and is another step to reducing violence and keeping our streets safe.   Call the 105th Precinct at 776-9090 if you need more information.

REPAIRING AND BUILDING CURBS

Home and property owners are responsible for the maintenance and repair of their sidewalks, although the sidewalks are on City property.   However, the City will repair damaged curbs or build curbs that are missing.   To report such conditions, call Community Board 13 at 464-9700.   Your request will be forwarded to the Department of Transportation for investigation and action.

Report leaks and water waste by calling DEP-HELP (337-4357)

Prince VFW Post 6478 and American Legion Post 301 will join together on Memorial Day, Monday May 27, at 11:00 A.M., in Veterans Plaza, Springfield Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue, to honor our fallen and living war veterans.   We must never forget them and the sacrifices they made for us. Please come and bring along friends and neighbors.

If your credit cards are lost or stolen..

To limit the damage if this happens to you, cancel your credit cards immediately.   It is very helpful if you have your credit card bills handy so that you can use the toll free numbers to report the loss and give your account numbers.   File a police report in the jurisdiction where the loss or theft occurred. This proves to your creditors that you were diligent in trying to recover your property.   Most importantly, call the three national credit reporting organizations without delay to place a fraud alert on your name and social security number.   The alert means that any company that checks your credit knows that your information was stolen and that they have to call you by telephone to authorize new credit.   The numbers are:   Equifax, 1-800-525-6285;   Experian (formerly TRW) 1-800-3001-7195; and Trans Union, 1-800-680-7289.   You can also call the Social Security fraud line at 1-800-269-0271.
