| In the late 1700's most English peppered moths were light gray in color. However, some black moths did exist because of differences in the moth's genes. The moths lived on trees that had light gray bark. The moth's only natural predators were the birds. The birds would eat the moths they could see living on the trees. The Industrial Revolution began in England in the late 1700's. People built many factories to make cloth and other goods. Over time, smoke from the factories blackened the trunks of the trees where the moths lived. Now, instead of light gray, the bark of the tree was black. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
