| After last week's demolition in Maryhill, Queen's recovered well to run an experienced Morton side very close. Ally Dick and Andy Myles both hit a double, but it wasn't enough to beat the Greenock boys. Ian Fitzpartick was back in defence after a break in Australia, but Stephen McGilp was in the "Big Apple", New York City. The sports centre was unsurprisingly empty and the non-believers probably found it difficult to work out why fans would play a game of football while an Old Firm match was underway. Hector Cook, team director, decided to play the strongest formula in the first half and left Martin Kelly, Fraser Gibson, Paul Bladworth and Alan Raeburn on the bench/side. It was obvious from the start that Morton were a strong side, but had naively left all their weight in defence. This was exploited by Ally Dick, up-front with Paul Quigley, who chased through-balls from defence. The game was fairly balanced with Martin Harvey, team goalkeeper, and Ian Fitzpatrick linking well at the back. Harvey had made some good stops early on, but could do nothing to stop the opener from Morton. He commited himself to an original shot, but got lost on the edge of the area when a ludicrous "lob" beat everyone and dropped into the net. Harvey was rightly furious, but Queen's responded well. Ally Dick, as mentioned, had found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, but had missed a few good opportunities. It was Andy Myles, however, that picked up the scraps of a defensive mix-up to score the equaliser. The Morton keeper kicked the ball out, only as far as Myles who calmy struck a low "daisy-cutter" shot into the net. Dick had missed two great chances to score, but, as Hector Cook mentioned, he would get "third-time lucky" just before half-time. Paul Quigley was fouled in the box and referee Frank Reilly pointed to the spot. Dick stepped up and struck an excellent penalty to put Queen's 2-1 up at half-time - what a shocker! James Turnbull had a ticket for the Old Firm match and left at half-time. He was replaced by Paul Bladworth. Apart from this change, the team remained the same. Derek Stronach and Graeme Shields rightly played the second half. After the restart, Morton equalised. A brave swerving shot from 8 yards beat Harvey and the teams were tied again. Morton were beginning to wear the Spiders down and their equaliser, albeit extremely lucky, was coming. Fitzpatrick and Harvey both went for the same ball and somehow a Morton player got between the two - no easy feat- to punt the ball over Harvey. Following this goal, Cook brought off Harvey for Kelly to jokes from the Morton fans about height, Gibson came on for Stephen McGovern and Jamie McNab was replaced by Alan Raeburn. It was still more or less one-way traffic and Morton got their fourth before Kelly could get his breath. The player took an age, doing a "Cassius Clay" shuffle in the process, before easily powering the ball into the net. Ian Fitzpatrick was invaluable at the back for Kelly as he took all of his goal-kicks; Distribution clearly not Kelly's strong-point. A Morton fifth was added shortly after their fourth, a strong cross left the player with an easy hook into the net. Injury wise, Kelly gained a huge graze on his elbow and Alan Raeburn was bleeding after heading the ball too hard. Morton's sixth was created by a defensive mix-up and the Morton forward nipped ahead to prod a shot past Kelly. In what was a depressing last 30 minutes for Queen's, Andy Myles scored the goal of the match with a brilliant solo effort. Myles strode past the Morton defence with ease and blasted the ball past a helpless goalkeeper. The game finished 6-4 to Morton, probably a fair reflection of the game, but a huge improvement from last-week. Hec is going to arrange fixtures in the coming months versus Airdrie, Aberdeen and another Morton side and the QP supporters are looking forward to it. Team: Harvey (Kelly), McGovern (Gibson), Stronach, Fitzpatrick, Turnbull (Bladworth), Shields, Quigley, McNab (Raeburn), Dick, McKendrick, Myles. Men of the Match: Andy Myles and Ian Fitzpatrick. |
