| BRAVE SPIDERS BEATEN BY THE BULLY WEE |
| Clyde 7 Queen's Park 3 |
| This wasn't the demolition that the scoreline might suggest. In fact, the Queen's Park supporters probably played their best football so far, yet still lost out to a younger and fitter Clyde. After the excellent 9-1 win against Aon, confidence was higher than usual (!) But the Spiders were without several important players, namely James Turnbull, David Clancy, David James and Ally Dick. Clyde showed from the start that they were the better team, but Queen's held firm. Kelly tipped over a close-range chip, then blocked from a one-on-one situation. Clyde scored after around 15 minutes, however. Confusion in the defence had Kelly stranded and the Clyde player chipped the goalie from 10 yards. A good goal, but frustrating for the QP defence which had been playing so well. Clyde still rushed forward and scored a second after Kelly fumbled a low cross. The Queen's attack of Raeburn and Tannahill weren't getting much of the ball, but the midfield were trying their hardest to work the ball forward and help the defence, which was still doing well under the intense pressure from the youthful Clyde front-line. After missing several good chances and making poor use of set-pieces, Clyde added a third just before half-time, with Kelly expertly lobbed by a very lanky Bully Wee forward. At half-time the players were commended by coach Cook for their brave performance and for keeping the score relatively low at 0-3. The second half started better, and Stephen McGilp scored from QP's first shot on goal after a poor goalkeeper clearance landed at his feet at the edge of the box. Clyde were getting complacent, but they blasted in another to make it 4-1. They made it five soon after, and we all wondered when the scoring was going to end as the Queen's legs began to tire. Fraser Gibson came on for Alan Tannahill after 55 minutes. Paul Bladworth was the unfortunate scorer of an own goal to give Clyde their sixth. A high ball was punted across the goal and the defender had no choice but to try and clear the ball as soon as possible with a Clyde man at his back. Sadly, he couldn't divert the ball from the goal, and the ball wizzed past Kelly and into the top left corner of the net. 6-1, then. But were the Spiders squashed? Nope. David Ferguson scored a bizzare goal after more slack Clyde defending. He hooked in a volley over the keeper after a Queen's corner. Queen's were forging forward more despite playing no better then they did in the first half and Stephen McGilp added his second and Queen's's third from 40 yards, lobbing the Bully Wee goalie expertly. Even though Clyde bundled in a 7th near the end, this was an excellent performance from the Queen's who were strong in defence and midfield. After the game, the team "horsed" it back to Broadwood for the free pies and soup. Yes, we are still the buffet masters despite being quite mince at football. Next up is "central-belt" Stranraer on the 17th of April. More of the same will do!
