Queen's Park
1
( Ferry )
Motherwell
2
( Foran, McDonald )
In an unremarkable game at the West of Scotland Science Park on Maryhill Road, Motherwell ran out 2-1 winners. Having turned up late, I missed the first two goals: a penalty by Foran for Motherwell after McGinty had brought down McDonald, and Mark Ferry's response for Queen's, picking up a loose ball on the edge of the area before volleying past Marshall. These were both scored in the opening 10 minutes or so, but for most of the first half thereafter Motherwell had control, and won the game through McDonald's fine goal, a speedy drive on the turn in 29 minutes. What was most obvious from the game ( and making judgments based on a game against SPL opposition is admittedly hazardous ) is that we urgently need a new frontman. Felvus and Weatherston worked hard, Felvus having one reasonably good shot, but both seem to lack the guile to get goals at this stage. Certainly, as a pairing they are unimaginable as a first-choice. None of the young players involved particularly stood out, though midfielder Liam McCann seems talented. With no new signings yet, it may be that the youthful element will be heavily involved in the season to come. Another priority for Billy Stark must be the signing of one or two wide players, as neither Stuart Kettlewell nor Ross Clark look comfortable in these roles. The next pre-season venture will be a game against St. Mirren on Thursday, with the venue as yet unknown.

Queen's Park: David Crawford, Andy McGinty, Stevie Gibson ( Stuart Kettlewell ), Steven Reilly ( Ross Campbell ), Richard Sinclair, Damiano Agostini, Ross Clark ( Brendan McIlduff ), Bryan Felvus ( Paul Paton ), David Weatherston, Paul Harvey ( Liam McCann ), Mark Ferry.

Goals: Richie Foran penalty 11, McDonald 29.
