John Gemmell Born: Glasgow, 6th September 1984 Signed: from Giffnock North, October 2001 Height: 6ft 2in Mass: 12st 7lb Debut: vs. Albion Rovers ( as substitute ), 27/10/01 QP League Career Apps Goals 2001/02 7 ( 5 ) 3 This season has seen John Gemmell become a regular in the Queen's line-up, and the chief threat to opposing defences. He made a memorable full debut by scoring the only goal at East Stirling in the club's first win of last season, and followed that up with a magnificent strike at East Fife a couple of weeks later. He was relegated to back-up for most of the remainder of the season, but started this term as a first-choice up front. He is into double figures for goals scored, virtually all of them on home soil, and has utilised his main attributes in scoring most of those: formidable strength, powerful heading and a rasper of a shot. There are a number of rough edges in John's game that will need smoothing ( ball control, mobility, awareness ), but he boasts real potential as a striker. Great raw talent, and still only eighteen.
Willie Martin Born: Glasgow, 21st August 1981 Signed: from Kilmarnock, May 2000 Height: 6ft 1in Mass: 13st Debut: vs. Partick Thistle, 03/03/2001 QP League Career Apps Goals 2000/01 5 ( 6 ) - 2001/02 9 ( 16 ) 3 The phrase "never say die" was basically invented to describe William McLean Martin, a player who puts in so much graft during games it must embarass other players. He started out principally as a striker, but a lack of genuine poaching ability has led to him often being played in more wide areas, where his strong, unpredictable running and constant harrying of opponents are a source of menace. Now hopefully fully recovered from an appendix operation, he is well set to assume a regular role in the team.
James White Born: Glasgow, 5th June 1980 Signed: from Chryston U'21s, June 2001 Height: 6ft Mass: 11st 6lb Debut: vs. Montrose, 04/08/01 QP League Career Apps Goals 2001/02 7 - No-nonsense defender who first got a real run in the team in the last 6 games of last season as part of a back three. Likely to act as cover for the rest of the season.
Craig Taggart Born: Glasgow, 17th January 1973 Signed: from Ross County, August 2002 Height: 5ft 9in Mass: 12st 4lb Debut: vs. East Fife ( as substitute ), 17/08/02 Craig has been about a bit, having played for Clydebank, Stirling Albion and Ross County as well as in Ireland. Lack of fitness has been a real obstacle to his progress so far, and his appearances have been sporadic. It is also generally felt that he will have to show more commitment and heart when playing in the midfield. But Kenny Brannigan certainly seems to rate him so Craig is likely to have ample opportunity to shine when he is not unavailable through injury.
