| Yet it is possible to find common threads running through all of Queen's displays recently- the principal being, as has been repeated ad infinitum, the failure to finish properly in front of goal. What more can John McCormack try? Today's line-up was, on paper, probably the strongest he could have fielded in the circumstances, with the possible exception of the exclusion of Gemmell. When Canning and Fisher are fit, Queen's will possess an abundance of skilled wide players, but what they need is a skilled central player up front. Willie Martin appears not to be the answer, despite his graft and strong running. John Gemmell lacks pace and positional sense. Neither are the best of finishers. All eyes will turn to Menelaws when he is fit, and it will be a long time since any new Queen's player has been under such pressure to succeed. As for the rest of the team; Johnny Whelan has failed to show much form this season; not able to make strong runs or incisive passes except on rare occasions. Ferry was again the star man, exhorting his team-mates with boundless energy and no little skill. What a shame that his fine season so far has found little tangible reward in terms of pointage. Fallon, Moffat, Allan and Agostini also gave decent performances. What next? A lot of time for thought for Cowboy, as the visit of Montrose isn't for two weeks yet. A win could provide the boost that will lift us away from the bottom, but in the meantime the cloud of despondency still hangs over Hampden Park. Stirling Albion: Reid, Nugent, Hay, McNally, Rowe, Duncan ( Davidson ), Dunn, McKinnon ( Reilly ), Mallan, Cummings ( Moore ), O'Brien. Goal: McKinnon 34. Queen's Park: Stewart, Fallon, J. Gallagher, Moffat, Agostini, Quinn, Ferry, Whelan ( Taggart ), Martin ( P. Gallagher ), Jack ( Gemmell ), Allan. Attendance: 579. |
