Daemon Squirrel - 1997
Queen's Concrete Canoe

This competition was excellent.  A lot of credit is due to the organizers at E.T.S. for the great job they did.  Congratulations to Universite Laval, whose boat Arkonak won the competition and traveled to Cleveland for the American finals.

Our 1997 canoe was called the Daemon Squirrel.  It was 5.6 m (18' 2") in length, and weighed between 75 and 90 kg, depending on how long it had been in the water.  Our inexperience meant we used latex waterproofing paint which washed off during the races.  This allowed our very porous concrete mix to suck up a great deal of water during the competition.  The canoe was quite fast, but would not go in a straight line due to a bend in the keel, which was accidentally placed there during construction.  This made racing rather awkward.

Our canoe could not have gone as far as it did without the help of our very generous sponsors.  Besides those listed here, there were many people who offered encouragement and advice, even though some didn't believe the Squirrel would float.  We would especially like to thank Dave Tryon and Richard Morrison, in the Civil and Mining departments respectively, for all their help.
