Queen's Concrete Canoe - Krakatoa
For your viewing pleasure, you will find here photos of Krakatoa during the construction phase.
weights.jpg Here is some testing of a sample composite section.
mesh.jpg Our preliminary design was done using ANSYS, a finite elements package. We also used it to assess the stress distributions.

NB: This image only shows the general form of the canoe, not the results of analysis.

hotair.jpg Last year we put epoxy over the styrofoam, then sanded the male mould and poured the concrete. This resulted in an uneven bottom, and the loss of a week removing the bonded styrofoam. Sanding first, and then applying this plastic sheeting allowed us to remove the mould in a morning.
towing.jpg We tested our design in one of the flumes available in the Civil Department, comparing the drag with that produced by a model of last year's design.
vincent.jpg This is a picture of the pour. The concrete was sufficiently stiff that we packed in on by hand.
