Jellylorum is one of two cats who have a poem written about them who don't have it performed at the Jellicle Ball. The other is Cat Morgan, who doesn't even appear in CATS, although his poem is in Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. In that poem she is called a "Lillie Cat," which is described as a small cat, but one whose purpose is to be USEFUL (and T.S. Eliot used all caps). She is also named in The Naming of Cats.

Being in a main character, the actress who plays Jellylorum doesn't understudy anyone. But sometimes the actresses who play Rumpelteazer or Victoria will understudy Jellylorum! Jellylorum is not one of the main dancing parts. What is required of this queen is a strong voice. Not only does she sing her duet with the aging Gus, but she also must play the part of the "diva-esc" Griddlebone.

Jellylorum is found in all productions of CATS (well, that I know of). She has been played as everything from a queen of Demeter and Bombalurina's age (Broadway, Germany), to an older queen who is closer in age to Jennyanydots (the CATS Video). Sometimes she is also played as something in the middle. But common consensus is that Jellylorum is a queen who helps to take care of the kittens of the tribe. Also, most people agree that Jellylorum has some sort of connection with Gus, the Theater Cat. Theories range from mate to concerned tribe memeber who just watches out for her elder. Peronally, the explanation I find most plausable is that she's his kitten. She obviously knows the family trade of acting. How else could she do a 180 personality switch into Griddlebone? Also, while she may appear to be infatuated a little with Bustopher Jones (as are most of the adult queens who circle around him at the end of his song), it is my personal theory that her most likely candidate for a mate would be Skimbleshanks.

Generally, Jellylorum is a yellow or light brown queen, usually with some sort of stripe pattern. In many productions she has a collar of what appears to be some sort of braided cord.

Jellylorum's main parts in the show include:

Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats where she sings "When you fall on your head, do you land on your feet?"

One of the Gumbie Trio with Bombalurina and Demeter in The Old Gumbie Cat

One of the adults who keeps the kittens away from Grizabella when she appears

One of Bustopher Jones' Chorus in Bustopher Jones

A pug in The Awful Battle of the Pekes and the Policles

Has the line "Jellicles dry between their toes" in The Jellicle Ball

Sings a duet with Gus in Gus: The Theater Cat

Plays Griddlebone in Growltiger's Last Stand
