Aye, she be a lady, but this lady has claws. Words that might come from Growltiger the Bravo Cat. Griddlebone is a fictional character from Jellicle lore, and the story of her ill fated love affair with Growltiger is told at the Jellicle Ball. While Gus takes on the guise of Growltiger, Jellylorum drops her usual proper manner and becomes the seductive deva feline fem fatale, the Lady Griddlebone. Or at least, that's how it usually works. In one or two productions (Paris and Norway, I believe), in an even bigger character flip, Jennyanydots becomes the enigmatic white queen. And she is always white. Some shows give her a pink or pale purple bib on her chest (with lacing to give us the impression of a corset and sometimes with a cute little heart on it). She also usually has claws on her gloves, the only queen besides Grizabella who has this trait.

Origionally serenaded with a bawdy ballad, The Ballad of Billy McCaw, Griddlebone finally got a little more romance when Broadway introduced the Italian Un Tempida Notte to the show (Although it is really nothing more than a rehash of the first part of the song, it does at least sound a little more romantic).

Watching the two lovers is actually quite humorous. They are complete oposites to each other except for one thing: both of them have tremendously big egos. After being ignored by Growltiger, who is getting way too involved with his singing to pay attention to the queen he is actually trying to woo, Growltiger gets Griddlebone's claws raked across his front. The two of them then launch into a duet where they are both trying to outdo the other in the song, each posturing to one side of the audience. After concluding their song (usually ending with Griddlebone hitting high C and then getting her arms pinned to her side by Growltiger), the two lovers retire to their bed, or boat. Then the Siamese attack! Usually trying to use Griddlebone as a feline shield, is when Gehngis/Gilbert says "Then Griddlebone, she gave a screech, for she was badly skewered / I'm sorry to admit it, but she quickly dissapeared." Griddlebone will give a little scream/screech/yip/meow/whatever, and run off leaving Growltiger to fend for himself. Which serves him right. The coward.

But does she drown? Unlikely. Growltiger seems to have absolute faith in her ability to survive. "She probably escaped with ease / I'm sure she did not drown" is what he tells the audiance. Also, on a slightly more sinister note, Bombalurina seems to know about Griddlebone. The white queen is mentioned as an associate of none other than the Nepoleon of Crime himself, Macavity!

Other interesting facts:

Although one of the most popular numbers, Growltiger's Last Stand (and therefore Griddlebone), was not in the CATS Video

Growltiger, no matter the production, seems to have a facination with Griddlebone's tail.

Griddlebone is quite fussy. In shows with a bed, she'll refuse to get on it until it's just the way she wants it.

When ignored by Growltiger, Griddlebone will flip her tail around in annoyance before getting the idea to claw him.

The first clue to Growltiger and the Crew that Griddlebone is coming? They smell something clean.
