The Bible says "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;" Romans 3:23, and "For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23. This means that each and every one of us is born into sin, and has no hope of eternal life. Even if we think we are "not so bad", the Bible says "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12. When God realized that his creation had fallen, and could never redeem themselves, he became a man himself. Since he was sinless, he was not under the curse of sin, and he did not sin while he was on the earth. As a result, he was the only human being ever, who could possible qualify to save mankind. "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Romans 5:8. Since the wages of sin is death, someone had to die, to pay for all of mankind's sins. The most logical thing would be for God to just let each of us die, and pay for our own sins. But his love for us caused him to come up with another solution. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." John 3:16. Jesus was actually willing to take all of our sins upon himself, and bear the punishment that we all deserve. When he hung on the cross, with our sin upon his sinless self, God had to turn his back on his own Son. Being holy and pure, God cannot look at sin, not even on Jesus. When Jesus cried out "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?", which means "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" he was in complete anguish. For the first time in his life, he was separated from his Father, and he hung dying, totally alone, and covered in sin that was not his own. But the story doesn't end there - since he was perfect, and sinless, death couldn't hold him. After three days, he rose from the dead, and in doing so, won for all eternity the battle with death and sin. He wants his victory to be our victory as well. He wants us to come to him, and identify with and accept what he did for us, and invite him into our hearts. "But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:" John 1:12. Not only does he offer eternal life to those who do, but he also offers peace here on earth - "Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28. When you become a Christian, Jesus will bear your burdens for you, and his spirit will actually live in you, and give you peace, joy, and strength. "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and
with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." Romans 10:9-10.
If you would like to receive Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and be able to know that you have eternal life, say a prayer something like this: "Lord Jesus, I am sorry for my sins and I ask you to forgive me. I open the door of my heart and receive you as my Lord and Saviour. Take control of my life and begin making me the person you want me to be. Thank you Jesus for saving me and for hearing my prayer. In Jesus' name. Amen."
