These are layers that surround the body. Each layer serves a different purpose and each layer appears to become more rarefied as it gets further away from the body. The exact number of auric layers is not known; different people seem to consider different numbers of layers. Another unknown is whether each layer is only at the level of the layer, like an onion or whether it reaches to the body from its outer layer, so that each auric layer is represented close to the body and at the furthest layer only one layer exists. This last image provides the best way of understanding what the aura is and how it works. All the layers of the aura near the body form a dense region of subtle energy that is closer in energetic value to the physical body than the individual layers furthest from the body. Each layer has a certain energy the further out it can reach. The idea is that the higher the frequency the less the influence of the physical body has in restricting the expansion of the energy field.
ETHERIC LAYER.
The aura is of a very high frequency and the frequency becomes higher the further from the body the field reaches. The field nearest the body has a lower frequency. This field is the etheric layer. It acts like a pattern for the actual physical body to grow into.
EMOTIONAL LAYER.
The second auric layer is the emotional layer. This relates to the feelings of the individual. If there are difficulties with emotions, this second layer may feel thick or "soupy" so that it is difficult to move your hand through it. Using a sweeping motion at different heights above the body it is possible to feel any areas that are out of balance.
MENTAL LAYER.
The third auric layer is the mental layer. The information from the mental layer filters down through the emotional layer to the physical layer where it can take form. The mental aspect enables the individual to take their own power and create their personal will.
ASTRAL LAYER.
The fourth auric layer is the astral layer. This is the link between the physical auras and the more ethereal and spiritual layers. It may act as a transforming layer taking the very high frequency energies of the higher levels and changing them so that they can be used at the mental, emotional and physical levels.
SPIRITUAL LAYER.
After the fourth layer the information about the auric layers becomes less clear. This layer could be considered part of our soul. These higher layers may provide information for the lower layers from a greater source of energy. It is at these layers that a form of psychic connection between people can take place. The spiritual layers may extend beyond the body by a considerable distance.
