Mario Rodriguez (update Oct. 2002)
As I received this most recent update on Mario's activity, he was doing some domestic activity, (the dishes) in which he wounded himself but, assured me he survived and the dishes got done.
What's been going on:
As you are probably aware by now Houston 2012 is no longer in the running, so my commitment to that is winding down (as a board member.) I
made a lateral move from working directly with the USOC as a paralympic athlete representative with wheelchair fencing to basically doing the same thing
with Wheelchair Sports of USA (WSUSA).
Not wanting to sound negative bad about the process, I would just like to point but it has taken a rather long time to form US Paralympics, which is actually being run in house at the USOC. The long term goal is to provide better and more comprehensive programs and services to America's elite disabled athletes.
What this means for organizations like WSUSA is that they will change their focus to developing grassroots programs and phase out supporting elite athlete
programs. I am the wheelchair fencing rep for that organization and also on the board of directors.
My last major competition was at the world championships in Budapest, Hungary, late April, where I didn't do particularly remarkable. I do not remember what
place I finished, but I think it was around 13 or 14th in men's A foil and probably 19th in saber. Overall I did achieve the best results for an "A" category men's
fencer from the US., but still finished lightyears behind our "B" category fencers both men and women. The highlight for me was making it to the semi-finals in
the men's team foil event, but in the end we finished 4th out of 10 teams. In general, our results were quite good. It is a good indicator what is to come in
Athens.
We will be holding a zonal competition and world cup (the first world cup to be held in the United States) in Austin, Texas in early November. I am on the
organizing committee, but in truth, I haven't been that organized.
Since returning from the world championships, (I was in Europe about three months,) I am officially single again.
Over the past year I have been working with my prosthetist and he has engineered a new leg for me and is currently working on improvements, (hopefully,
incorporating the C-leg for trials very soon.) The C-leg is a pretty sophisticated lower leg device that allows someone such as myself to walk with variable
gait and (it is my understanding) that is much more forgiving, but I have to learn this first hand.
I joined an orchestra and had my first concert in some many years where we performed two pieces, the second of which I feel I accomplished more, the
Brahms 1st or 4th symphony, (I've already forgotten!)
I've been a musician most of my life and do enjoy occasionally playing with a more organized group, but mostly by myself for my own pleasure and relaxation.
I am in great shape and currently am doing much handcycling and swimming for cross-training and general fitness.
