Sydney Paralympics praised as `best ever'

October 29, 2000 SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- The Paralympics closed before a crowd of 100,000 and with a familiar accolade -- these were the best games ever. ``Thank you, Australia for enhancing the profile of our athletes, more than at any time in our history,'' International Paralympic Committee president Robert Steadward said Sunday. Steadward declared these the best Paralympics, just as IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch said of the Sydney Games four weeks earlier. Steadward praised the 15,000 volunteers who assisted in an event featuring more than 4,000 disabled athletes from 125 nations. Australian Governor-General Sir William Deane called the Olympics and Paralympics an inspiration for peace. ``These games have brought the people of the world a little closer together and demonstrated that the things that unite mankind far outweigh the things that divide,'' he said.

Salt Lake City chief executive officer Frank Joklik anticipates the newly announced $18 million funding program to boost U.S. athletes heading into the 2002 Winter Olympics. "Whether this funding is a first step and there is more to come is yet to be seen," Joklik said. "Obviously, the success of the host team is closely tied to the success of the Games. We're very pleased that USOC has made this commitment. It's their job to train the athletes." (see link below)

Myth: U.S. Olympic athletes compete once every four years.

Truth: U.S. Olympic athletes compete throughout the year in both Winter and Summer sports. They still have the same great stories, the same conquering of adversity and the same triumphs.
So why have other Olympic-themed web sites already closed shop with so much left to tell?

Those same stories and athletes are covered throughout the year on USOC Online.

In the coming weeks, we will feature coverage of the VII Paralympic Winter Games, speed skating's short track nationals, world cup skiing and snowboarding, and more summer sport information.

Paralympic Games 2002 The Winter Paralympic Games the Olympic Games for athletes with visual and locomotive disabilities will feature fivesports, including alpine skiing, cross country skiing, biathlon, ice sledge hockey and ice sledge racing.
