| Most of Glorfindels history is unknown. What little of it is told starts in the First Age, when he is mentioned to have escorted Aredhel with Ecthelion and Egalmoth, and that she wondered from them. Later it is recorded that he fought in that battle of the Battle of Unnumbered Tears and aided in the retreat by guarding the left flank. During sometime of the First Age, Glorfindel became head of the House of the Golden Flower of Gondolin, though whether he was born to the position or took it upon the building of Gondolin, it is unknown. Later, in the battle of Gondolin, he and those of his men fought valiantly against the beasts of Melkor, before eventually having to retreat to guard the rear flank of the fleeing people of Gondolin. A Balrog came upon them, and Glorfindel leapt forward to battle with it. After wounding it, the Balrog began to fall, and caught hold of Glorfindels long golden hair, causing them both to fall. He is resurrected in the second age, though the date or any other fact about it is unknown. Early in Third age, Glorfindel leads a force from Rivendell to fight against the Witchking of Angmar, in which the Elven forces won, and the Witchking flees. Late Third age, Glorfindel sets out to find Aragorn and the hobbits. He finds them, after brief run ins with the Nazgul, and helps in rescuing Frodo by setting him upon Asfaloth, his horse. The last record of Glorfindel is in Return of the King, where he is mentioned briefly to coming to Gondolin in Elronds company. Whether or not he left with Elrond is unknown. |
