When you purchase a Hacky Sack brand foot bag, you definately get a sweet instruction book to give you the do's and don'ts of hacky.  I am going to type out the instruction book here, because first thing first.  I'll have all the coolest parts of the instructions in a red colour for those of you who like to skim.  I kno a few people who could learn a few things from these instructions.... you kno who you are.

Getting Started: The goal is to keep the HACKY SACK footbag off the ground without using your hands. Once you've mastered the basic kicks you'll enjoy playing solo, with a partner or in a footbag circle group.  And while you're having fun, you'll be strengthening and improving your foot-eye coordination.
First, put the HACKY SACK footbag down, and just go through the following motions.  Stand on one foot with your knee slightly bent.  Now bring up your other foot in a flat position.  Turn your ankle so that the inside of you foot becomes as flat as possible.  Bring your foot up to knee level, slapping the flat of your hand.  Remember to keep your support leg a bit flexed or bent.  Shift and lift from foot to foot.  This is the motion for the inside kick.
Kicking:  The most important thing to do is relax. Drop the footbag directly infront of you.  Use the inside kick motion to try to make contact with the footbag.  If you can bump it back to your hand, you're doing great! If you missed it, don't worry.  Just try again, remember to keep your foot FLAT.
Insider Tips:  1. Slow down.  It's easy to react too fast. Bring your foot up, lifting smoothly, and "bump" the footbag. 2. Keep your eye on the footbag.  If you focus on the footbag as if falls below your waist, you'll have an easier time kicking. 3. Learn to kick with both feet. 4. Wearing shoes is advisable.  It's next to impossible to play barefoot or in sandles. Try court shoes.
The Outside Kick:  We're not assuming you've perfected your inside kick, but it's never too soon to start on your outside kick.  Lift your leg away from your body to the side.  Keep your foot flat, toes out, and lean away from the kick.  Keep your support leg flexed and your eye on the HACKY SACK footbag.  Kick with the outside flat of your foot.  Remember to slow down and just "bump" the footbag in a nice, easy manner.
Kicking With Friends: Once you kick a few times, try playing with a friend.  Toss the footbag gently to eachother.  How long can you pass the footbag back and forth?  Once you've got three or more people together you've got a footbag-circle. It works out really well beacause those bad kicks off to the sides begin to look like intentional passes. At about eight people it is best to split into two groups so that everyone gets to kick more often.
Other Basic Kicks:  You can also use your knees and toes to keep the HACKY SACK footbag aloft.  Eventually you will be able to kick the footbag no matter how it flies toward you.
Kicking Etiquette:  1.  Never catch the footbag in your hand.  2.  When starting a rally, never drop the bag to yourself.  Give a courtesy toss to another player.  3.  Beware of monopolizing the footbag.  Kick a few and pass to someone else.  4.  Don't apologize if you miss the footbag.  Everyone messes up now and then, and everyone will know you meant to kick it properly.
Here are some different styles of footbags, and a drawing of some killer hacky shoes!
