A lecture on "Cooling and trapping atoms with
photons" in the
Lindemann Lecture Theatre, Oxford, Summer 1996.
Photo taken not during a 5 minute break in which we were allowed to go
mad, but during a demonstration of how difficult it is to manipulate
something as huge as an atom with such weedy things as photons. In case you don't get it, the beach ball is the atom, the paper aeroplanes are the photons, and we, the punters, are attempting to deflect the beach ball back to the lecturer who threw it at us by hurling paper aeroplanes at it. And you thought physics was dull. |
