Guardian Angel
Submitted by D.D. Ellis

In June of 1979, I was in the U.S. Navy, stationed in San Diego, Ca. I was due to be honorably discharged in early July, and I wanted to join the Coast Guard when I got out. As I was a Radioman, I knew that I would have to know Morse code in order to join the Coast Guard, and I needed to brush up on it a bit, as I was rusty. The only course available was at the main training center.

During the three weeks I went there, I had a hard time finding a parking space (not unusual), so I parked in the only available space I could. I got a parking ticket for it. It is a well known fact that Sailors have no money, so the standard procedure was to go to "traffic court", where a Chief Petty Officer would chew you out for awhile, and threaten you with dire consequences if you ever did that again.

On the duly appointed day, I arrived for court. Since it was June, I was wearing dress whites, and it was typical Southern California day - absolutely gorgeous.

It was about 3:30 in the afternoon, and I had just finished getting my chewing out by the chief. I stepped out the main door and across the side walk. I looked left and then right, but the sun was just at the right angle to reflect off the buildings and partially blind me. I didn't see anything or anybody, so I continued to cross the sidewalk to my car which was parked on the far side of the street.

Just as I got to the curb, I was moving my right foot to take the last step into the street, when *something* hit me in the chest so hard, I was pushed back as step - just as a car whipped past me going in reverse at about 25 mph! The driver was looking over his left shoulder (opposite from me), and never even saw me. If I had taken that last step, he would have run me over and killed me. I know it was my guardian angel that hit me, as I felt no pain at all - just the pressure of the blow.

I went on to father two more children, and make a good life for my family. Thank you GuardianAngel!!!
