Angel of My Heart
submitted by Rita

In 1978 I was admitted to a large hospital in Philadelphia for open heart surgery, to have my aortic valve replaced with an artificial one. A young intern was "assigned" to me. And even to this day, I have no idea what his specific assignment was, as he mostly sat daily near my bedside and reassured me that there was nothing to fear. His presence always made me feel so calm and I looked forward to his daily visits. He was able to take away any fears I had. A lot of the times he would be standing near me whenever I had to get some very painful tests done just prior to the operation. He told me that even though I couldn't see him, he would be somewhere near. His last visit to me was just before the operation, and after I was in intensive care, he was no longer around. For a few days, I was quite sore and weak, but then when my strength began to return, I looked for him....to no avail.

On the day of my discharge, I asked the nurses, doctors, and even went to the information desk to inquire where I can find this man who held me up during the hardest part of my hospital stay. I wanted to thank him for all he did for me...his gentle care, and the hours he spent at my bedside, talking to me, making me feel so secure and unafraid. But to my amazement, no one knew of him nor was he in the list of interns. He was indeed not a figment of my imagination because I was not the only one that was there when he entered my room...Yet no one knew him.

I cannot explain it except to think that he was some angel, whether from heaven or earth... to keep me steady in a very stressful time of my life. Whoever he was, wherever he is....thanksAngel!
