Helen was awarded a McMyn scholarship at the University of Manchester where she studied with Bernard Gregor-Smith of the Lindsay Quartet. In June 2002, she performed the Vivaldi Concerto for two cellos in both Manchester and Venice and in June 2001 she performed Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme with the University of Manchester Sinfonietta. In 2002, Helen received a Proctor-Gregg Performance Prize from the University.

In May, Helen performed 'Nine settings of Lorine Niedecker' by Harrison Birtwhistle for cello and soprano in the Birtwistle 'Resonances' festival held at the RNCM which involved receiving coaching from the composer himself.
