When are we ever going to have a winning season? We are getting tired of losing and losing year after year. To top it off the administration and the head coach are not helping one bit. From the looks of it they have already giving up on us the seniors or the Returning Letterman and concentrated more on the Freshmen Team. Yes there are some true Porter fans that go out there every Friday night and support us. But its not an easy job for us the players to go out to the field on Game Night after losing the game before. Many people by now would have already quit the team. But personally I think we are the true winners. While other students go home eat and enjoy watching TV we are here for three hours strait with the sun burning down our backs and sweating tears of pain. Then Game Night comes, and we give everything we got; yet we dont always come out on top but we never give up. People blame our coaches but its a 50/50 thing. We dont have the best coaches in the world but they are not the ones playing out there, we are. The hardest things we have to put up during the year is Porter students and even the faculty making fun of us, the Varsity Football Players. Even though we pretend it doesnt hurt us, the hard working players hurt deep inside. Coaches right now are working us very hard but it doesnt make any sense to over work us this time of year. Yes to be on top we have to work for it but its not the easiest thing to do. It takes a lot of guts to wear one of the Porter Jerseys. Yes people think its easy because we never have a winning season but they dont know what we go through. We work our butts off every single day of the week, even though we dont win. Its hard to comeback the next day to school after losing a game, people will make fun of us and will never shut up. But the true Porter Football Players always have a lot of faith and we always held our head up high. The students that mainly make fun of us are the damn bums that dont do anything in school and dont have true Porter Pride. Yes its easy to talk the talk but none of them can walk the walk. We are the true Porter Pride Leaders, we never give up and when we bleed we will always bleed Blue. Ever since Porter High School was build in 1974 the Mighty Porter Cowboys have never made the Playoffs. I believe that their first year they just had the JV squad and they did pretty well. But ever since they made the Varsity Team they have just been on the bottom they have never been at the top, and we plan to change that next year. I believe that the closest thing they have ever come to District Champs is that 20 some years ago the Freshman Team won it. These past football season the same thing happened, the freshman were champions once again. Yes they have some good talent but they were just pretty well coached. But now they are getting all cocky and they are just roaming the halls. A true champion will always go to class and never fail a single class. Six years ago one of the most unbelievable things happened. The Mighty Porter Cowboys broke one of the most amazing records in Porter Football History. In the 1995-1996 Football Season they finally won a game and broke a 45 game losing streak that started in 1991. Another amazing thing happened the following year when Armando Torres (All-City, All-District, All-Valley), Omar Flores (All-District), and Justin Hernandez (All-District) led the team by going 4 and 6 during the season. That has been the most wins they have ever won in Porter Football history. They would have made it to the playoffs but unfortunately they lost their last game to Hanna with the score of 17-14. In the 1997-1998 season Justin Hernandez once again led the team with a few victories but once again they didnt make the playoffs. Also a few months ago a tragedy happened, God took Justin Hernandezs life with him. Throughout the years Porters Football Team has had different coaches almost every two years. This past three years that I had been in Porter weve had three different head coaches or Athletic Coordinator. In 1989 Porter experienced one of the best things ever in Porter Football history. With the help of Armando Rangel, which is now a Defensive Lineman coach here on his own turf, Porter won the most games in schools history up until 1996-1997. By winning three games in a season they captured everybodys attention. In 1994 Porter experience a new head coach with the name of Leonard Tolbert. Throughout his four years in Porter he worked with different coaches such as coach Ramirez, Rangel, Rhynes, Lerma, Brown, Morales etc, etc. After being here for 5 years he had won a total of 8 or 9 games so unfortunately he had to resign. He was one of the few coaches in the state that had won the most games in their career before he came to Porter. Before Coach Tolbert their were other coaches such as Cortez and in 1989 Coach Zavaleta. After Coach Tolbert left most of his helpers had to leave too. In the 1999-2000 season Porter signed Coach Rudy Gonzalez and his helpers. The only coach that stayed here in Porter after Coach Tolbert left was Willie Brown. Coach Rudy Gonzalez got tired of loosing after one year here in Porter which he told the newspaper, This has been the worst experience in my life, I wish it had never happened. That season we went 0 and 10 so Coach Gonzalez gave up on us because he was just used to winning with the Nikki Rowe Warriors. Now this past football season we were victorious just once against Edinburg Economedes. We were in every game and we will just loose by a couple of touchdowns. We will always end up loosing in the second half of the game because the defense will always get tired and we were always on the field. We gave the Hanna Eagles (District Champions) a run for their life after they were just up 7-0 at the end of the first half. The legendary Rivera Raiders were just up 14-0 at the end of the first two quarters when they played us the Mighty Porter Cowboys. Next year the Returning Letterman plan to change everything with the same coach we had this past season, Coach Farley Trevino. I have respect for this guy but he did one of the most stupid things ever. After having one of the best defenses in the district he fired Defensive Coordinator Robert Fraga, and Secondary Coach Willie Brown. Coach Brown has a seventeen-year experience of coaching throughout the state such as Waco, and Austin. He started his career in Huntsville H.S. in 1984 and later moved on to Mexia, Marlin, Brookshier-Royal, and Bastrop. To top it off he made the playoffs in every high school and he is also able to teach Chemistry, Biology and I.P.C. Coach Brown is also a good coach in Basketball and Track. In 1991 he took a winning team to the State Track Meet and in also helped the Porter Basketball Team to win District Champs in 1999-2000. Unfortunately he was fired and is moving on to coach at Hanna. Everything I know about Football I know it because he thought it to me. Robert Fraga has a 10-year experience which 9 of those came from La Feria. La Feria has always had a winning program and has always made it to the playoffs. He is also able to teach Chemistry, but once again he was also fired. We finally had two awesome coaches that would have taken us very far and knew what they were talking about but thanks to Coach Trevino they were both fired. A Coach coming from a middle school replaced Coach Brown and we still havent found a Defensive Coordinator. If only people really knew what us the Varsity Football Players go through every year, I personally think that some of them would think differently toward us. We really hurt deep inside of what people, students, and even the faculty say about us. We are trying not to take it too seriously or not to pay attention but its hard after they tell us everyday of the year. People say that the Porter Football Team is cursed because weve never had a winning season. When the team has well-coached players and expect to go to the playoffs something always has to happen. But we plan to change that next year with curse or no curse. We want to be on top, once were on top we will never fall and hopefully it would be next Fall. All credit for this editorial should be given to Pablo Villa, all I did was fix SOME of the errors. |
