"This is the absolute last thing I need right now!" Heidi Paige thought. Of course, she dare not say it out loud. Heidi was very angry right now. She already had a ton of homework to do, and just got some more from her Algebra teacher. "I know you've already got too much homework to do, but the state does mandate that I cover this stuff. In fact, we're going to have to speed up to get through it all." Heidi was near screaming. "Speed up? Wonderful. We're already covering a chapter a day. Everyone's at least 2 weeks behind already." She thought. Ms. Sepia wasn't normally an evil teacher, but something else seemed to be directing her into evil. Come to think of it, all of her teachers that were normally nice started to seem more and more evil, except for Mr. McMurtry. Heidi couldn't help but think this may be something sinister at work here….
"No, no, no!" You're going about this all wrong!" The man merely sat there for a moment, and then spoke. "So how would you go about doing this?" Emma asked. "You got to get into her confidence. She's not going to just up and join us without some kind of reason. What do we know about her?" The other man asked. "Very little. She's put up quite a number of barriers to let us find out about her." Emma replied dryly. The other man smiled slightly. "Then we're going to have to introduce another player to the game…"
Back with Heidi, she was at lunch with K.T. The two sat opposite each other. "Can you believe this? 4 pages of algebra homework, 2 essays in British Literature, and another chapter to read and summarize in history! I'm afraid to go to my next class." K.T. was in similar waters. "Yea, I've noticed the classes we've got together have had an increase in homework of late." Heidi was struck with this. "Whoa. Let me get this straight. This is happening in the classes we have together, but not the classes we don't have together?" Upon hearing this, K.T. was struck with the same notion. "Hey, you're right…" Heidi was not amused by this one. "All right, something's wrong here. Someone's messing with me, and I don't like it. I'm paying a visit to the vice-principal after school."
In Heidi's next class, intermediate computers, a new student greeted her. He was about her age, slightly taller, and an athletic build. He chose a seat right next to Heidi and sat down. Naturally, Heidi thought he was good looking, but wondered why he would sit near her when there was a seat open next to Lisa. Lisa, of course, was the popular cheerleader that everyone was in love with. Heidi didn't enjoy being near Lisa. Lisa considered herself vastly superior to Heidi, K.T., and pretty much any other teenage woman. Woe be onto anyone who she felt got into her way. Naturally, she felt that Heidi was in her way. A lot. They often had catty arguments when near each other. That's why the teacher sat them far away from each other. Anyway, The guy's name was Eric, and he didn't seem to be attracted to Heidi. Of course, the real person he was attracted to was another young woman who was sitting in the next row. This was Ilsa Daniel, better know as Winter. She remained aloof to him, however. Well, the class went on rather uneventfully. Lisa naturally (and conceitedly) thought that Eric was smitten with her. "Well, I'll just have to let him down." She thought. After class, Heidi had to rush to her locker to get her books for her math class, which was next. Surprisingly, Eric had been assigned the locker three down from Heidi. So the two of them were walking next to each other down to their lockers. Initially they didn't say anything. Then Eric asked Heidi were the Physics lab was. Heidi told him where it was and he was off. She seemed a little downhearted; after all, this could be a chance to gain a friend.
Well, after school, Heidi and K.T. were walking home next to each other. "So did you see the new guy?" K.T. asked. "Eric? Well, he seems okay…" Heidi replied. "I heard he asked someone about Ilsa…" K.T. said. "Ilsa? What in the world would he want to do with her?" Heidi asked. "Beats me. Who knows? Maybe he could thaw out the ice queen." Heidi and K.T. stared at each other briefly, and then giggled. "Right. Like that could happen." Heidi added.
The two of them walked away, little knowing what will be in store for them. Some distance behind them, Ilsa Daniel was walking on a different route towards the ice rink for her afternoon practice. Right behind her was Eric. She seemed oblivious to his following her until they entered the ice rink. The rink was open to the public at the time, so Eric decided to go in there and try ice skating. Of course, he never had done anything like it before, but was willing to try. Naturally, his first time out on the ice, he crashed right into the floor. Ilsa was amused by his antics at first. Then her father told her she should try to give Eric some help. Ilsa skated over to Eric, who was on his back for the fifth time in as many minutes. "You're going about it all wrong." She told him. "Perhaps you'd like to show me the right way." He said. Ilsa agreed to this. "First of all, skating is nothing like walking. It's more like gliding." With Ilsa's help, Eric was managing to skate well enough to fall only once every other minute within a few minutes. "Don't worry. It takes time to become proficient in skating." Ilsa told Eric. Of course, Ilsa took Eric's fascination with her cautiously; she really was more interested in skating and being the best than helping some novice skate. Once Eric was skating pretty much by himself, Ilsa left him and started to work on that tough triple axel she had such a hard tom to get. Eric skated around, but his eyes were still glued to Ilsa. Eric started to get better and better, very slowly. Pretty soon he could skate without falling down. They skated separately until the place closed, late in the evening. Eric then went home, as did Ilsa.
Heidi and K.T. were in the living room of Heidi's home, studying. They were having a bit of trouble with Spanish, so they decided to brainstorm on the homework. "El banquero me da uno presto." Heidi said. "And that means…?" K.T. asked. "The banker gave me a… loan?" Heidi said unsurely. "That's right." K.T. said as Heidi breathed a sigh of relief. "This is pretty hard. I don't know if I'll be ready for the quiz tomorrow. "We're almost done, Heidi. We've got just one more item: The verb jugar." K.T. said. "That means… to play, right?" Heidi asked. "Yea, but we have to conjugate it." K.T. responded. "All right… Yo jugo… no, that's not right…" Heidi started. "You need one more letter, Heidi…" K.T. said helpfully. "Yo…" Heidi shook her head. "Damn." K.T. came to the rescue. "Yo juego…" She said, reading from the book. "Oh yea… Yo juego, tú juegas, Él/Ella/Ud. juega, nosotros juegamos –" K.T. interrupted her. "Not irregular there." "Oh yea…" Heidi said. "Nosotros jugamos, vosotros jugáis, Uds./Ellos/Ellas juegan." K.T. smiled. "That's it, Heidi. Let's hope this will nail this quiz tomorrow."
Eric received a call on his cell phone. "Hello?" The woman on the other end sounded petulant. "Report, Eric." Eric seemed a little nervous. "Well, Ilsa is starting to come along fine now, and –" Emma, who was on the other end, got angry. "NO! You idiot!! You fell in love with the wrong girl!!" Emma was very angry with all this. "I told you to find the one with blue hair, not white hair! Winter was one of ours!" Eric was pragmatic about this. "Was. She decided to slip away and join this Blue haired girl. I'm trying to win her back." Emma was seeing red already, but now she was purple with rage. "WHAT!? Eric, We have to get them all! No excuses!" Eric stared nervously at Emma. "It's pretty hard to find out about Heidi. She's something of a loner. She's only got one friend." Emma, like Queen Victoria, was not amused by this. "Eric, I send you down there to find out everything you can about Heidi, and you end up falling in love with another young woman. I simply cannot have this." Eric was nervous about this. "Look, I tried. She's got a crush on someone. Who, I don't know." Emma gritted her teeth at Eric. "Find out who and get her to join us! I want results, not excuses!" She said. "You'll get results. It's just going to take time." Eric replied. "Time is of the essence. The sooner we get her in our camp, the better. My bosses are starting to lose patience. If this doesn't work, they may resort to… less covert methods." Eric thought for a moment. "Have you talked to her parents about this?" He asked. "No go there. This has to be under wraps for now."
Next morning, Heidi was up bright and early; She went to school and got settled into her Physics course. However, instead of Mr. McMurtry there, another man showed up. He was a tall, muscular type with close-cropped blonde hair. His sour expression let the people there know they were in for trouble. "Good morning, I am Coach Stansburg." He said. "Be afraid. Be very afraid." Heidi thought. "I'll be your physics teacher for the next few days. Mr. McMurtry has had an… accident." Heidi definitely didn't like the sound of that. Mr. McMurtry was her favorite teacher. "We're going to show a short film about the Coriolis effect, then have a nice quiz about it." Wonderful, Heidi thought. I have no *&#@ idea what he's talking about." This was the final straw. She was going to see vice-principal after this. "This can't be for real. It's got to be some kind of a trick." Heidi thought. "Why are all my classes speeding up and others are not?" Well, it wasn't the time to ponder such questions; she had a quiz to take. Well, once she got the test, she had a problem that everyone else had: The test was poorly photocopied, and practically impossible to read. "Wonderful. I'm sure this will just blow over." Heidi thought.
After the test, Heidi went to her locker and found a note inside. "If you want an easier time at school, meet me by the oak tree after school." It read. K.T was next to her when she read the note. "What are they talking about?" K.T. asked. "I don't know, but I'm going to see the assistant principal about this." Heidi said. Heidi went down to that place and K.T. went to their literature class. "Miss Paige, I don't understand what you are talking about." The assistant principal said. "We have given no orders to cover additional material in any class. The curriculum has remained the same since the school year began." Heidi pressed her case. "Well, several of my teachers say they have received e-mails about how they have to cover more material. For example, Mr. Kucinski in British Literature was told to cover all the works of Thackery, even though that wasn't part of the original plan." The vice-principal was confused. "We never gave such orders. I'll look into this." He said. "Thank you." Heidi responded. "And I'll write you a pass to get to class." He added.
It was after school that Heidi went to the oak tree. She dressed in her costume, however, expecting trouble. "Ah, welcome, Ms. Paige." There stood Megagust, attired in his uniform. Heidi could tell who it was immediately. "Aren't you that new kid… Derek?" Megagust scowled at her. "My name is Megagust, and I have a proposal for you." He said. "I got a bad feeling about this." Heidi replied. "Just hear me out. I want you to join us." He started. Heidi rolled her eyes again. "God, not you people again. Why won't you take no for an answer?" Heidi asked. "Because you're in no position to say no." Megagust said. "We will have you come with us – by hook or by crook." Heidi was getting mad by this point. "All right, so what's your superpower?" Heidi asked. "Please, I would rather this not come to fighting. We're only looking out for your best interests." Megagust said. "I'm leaving. Good bye." Heidi retorted. She started to walk off when a large blast of wind caught her and swept her off her feet. She crashed headfirst into the oak tree. "All right, that was a bad idea." Heidi said as she struck the tree. Megagust approached Heidi. "Look, I am trying to be nice about this. Just what's so wrong about coming along with us?" Megagust asked. "Don't give me that. I am now and forever an independent person." Heidi responded. Heidi then shot a blast of electricity at Megagust, who merely blew it away from him and to the ground. "Your powers are useless against me, Heidi. I've studied your powers and have come up with defenses against them." Megagust said. Heidi uneasily stood up and advanced on Megagust. "When a woman says no, she means no." Heidi said. Megagust merely blew her back into the tree again. Heidi hit the tree pretty hard, and a piece of the bark cut her arm. "I'll give you 24 hours to change your mind." Megagust said. He then flew up into the sky. Shortly afterwards, Marcus and K.T. came and found Heidi uneasily standing up. "Well, that did absolutely no good." Heidi said, nursing her head. "We'd better get you bandaged up." K.T. said. Heidi's head pounded like a sledgehammer on an anvil, so she didn't notice the cut on her arm. "Wha? Oh."
Later on, Eric was talking to Emma on the phone again. "I tried a friendly, direct approach. It didn't work." He told her. "We tried that before." She said. "She cannot be easily cajoled into coming here. We may have to take her by force." Eric added. "No. I don't want her harmed. She had to come here of her own free will." Emma responded. "That's easier said than done." Eric replied. "I am not sure if that's possible at all." Emma was not a woman to take no for an answer. "Bring her here, or you're finished! End of story!" She shouted as she hung up. "Wonderful." Eric replied.
Heidi, Marcus and K.T. were in her room thinking things over. "So you've got some guy who can blast you with air? That sounds like a big problem…" Marcus said. "Yea. I can't shoot him with electricity because he blows it off course. I'm not sure of what to do…" Heidi responded. "But I know something that might work, if I can just get an idea of how to use it against him." Marcus asked: "What might that be?" Heidi responded: "Well, in physics we learned that if a body is rotating, the wind patterns will generally be in arcs." K.T. smiled. I know where we can get him." She suggested… "Perfect." They spent the rest of the evening working out the plot to trap Megagust….
Next day in school, Heidi left a message on Eric's desk. It read: "I was wrong to push you away. Meet me in the playground after school." Eric smiled slightly and thought he may have gotten to her after all. Well, at the end of the day, Heidi was sitting on the merry-go-round in the playground. "So, have you come to your senses?" Megagust asked. "Eric, come on over here." Heidi said. He did as was told and sat down next to Heidi. "So are you ready to become one of us?" He asked. "I want a little more information? What do you do? Are you out to take over the world or something?" Heidi asked. "Ah, that would be telling." Eric responded. Heidi saw out of the corner of her eye that Marcus was ready for things. "Well, I really don't go someplace that I know so little about." Heidi said. She stood up. "But why the obsession with me? I mean, there are lots of other superpowered people out there." Heidi stood up and moved off the merry-go-round. "Well, electric types are hard to come by. Besides, we're going to give you all of the benefits. "Now, Marcus!" Marcus flipped a switch and the merry-go-round sprang to life. It turned quite rapidly, but Megagust was thrown to the ground at the side. "What the --!?" He held out his hands. "You tricked me! I'll blow you so far away you'll – UH!" When Megagust blew the wind, it followed the Coriolis effect and went in an arc. This, of course, struck him with his own power. "Well, what do you know, it worked…" Heidi said. Eric was stunned, but managed to spit these words out: "Defeated… but we'll come again… and again…" Marcus stopped the merry-go-round and then Heidi electrocuted Megagust, knocking him out. Marcus and K.T. entered from behind a tree, and approached Heidi. "Way to go, Heidi." Marcus said. "Thanks. Let's wrap things up here."
The following Monday, Heidi entered her physics class to find Mr. McMurtry there. "Well, I trust my substitute didn't cause you too many problems." He said. "I also found out there was some directive to speed up and cover more material in this course that was sent in from an outside source. We're tracking it right now, but everything will be back on schedule." He said. "Now, today's lesson is about the Coriolis effect…"
