Who came first The Quail or the Egg?
Whichever came first you'll most likely start out with a pair of Quail.  However once they settle in and get used to their new home you'll start noticing the odd egg about ever other two days for about two weeks. After this an egg every other day for about one week.  Then they come by the day.  Once the hen's body adjusts it will regulate to about every day / every other day.
One well matched pair will give aprox. 200 - 300 eggs in a year.
My Normal hen and Darth Vadar male have produced around 5 dozen (60) eggs in an 6 month time.
Pictures of button egg and this pair of quail soon to come.
Setting Up
To start I put together a home made incubater using mostly things around the house.
First I started by taking a box I had and cutting with a knife to look like the picture to the right.  I then added two string handles.  One to each door and taped a plastic window to the front door.
Lamp Hole
String Handles
Front Plastic Window
Front & Side Doors
1/8 " Wire Mesh
Once the box was ready I got a small sheet of 1/8" wire mesh and cut it to fit the box.
NOTE

It is a good idea to cut the mesh about 1/2" larger then the box on all 4 sides.  This way with 4 half inch cuts on the sides of the mesh at a half inch from the top. it will be easier to bend the mesh to secure it into place this way.  Securing is done in the space left between the bottom of the front door and the top of the side door.
Try to have the mesh 100% level.
Desk Lamp & 40Watt bulb
String or cord that will wrap around the box
Fish Tank Gravel
(washed)
Next the lamp was secured to the top of the box making sure the hole was large enough that the bulb would not touch but the lamp shade still covers.
Securing was done using the cord.
Squirt Bottle (for watter)
2 Pop Bottle Caps
(food & Watter)
At this point take a dish of some kind (ie. fake tupperware container) and fill it to half way with cool water.  Slide it in the side door under the mesh.  This with moderate the humidity.  (See object above the gravel unlabled)
Now put the gravel in one of the pop caps and place both caps in the incubater. The water spray bottle can be used to mist the eggs twice a week.  When the first quail hatches put water int the gravel pop cap and food in the other.
The First Incubated Egg
I like to mark on one side of every egg the number of the day it will hatch on.  (ei. 12/22 or 1/5) This is figured by adding the average hatch time to the day the egg was laid.  (ei. an egg laid 12/01/02 will hatch 12/18/02.  For larger quail types figure 19 days instead of 17 days.  Also you should always keep the larger side of the egg up this is where the air sack is.  View Egg Diagram and Development
