The New Born Chick
For the newborn Chicks what I do is place a pop cap full of Duck Starter that I have crumbed in a blender almost to a powder.  Why do I use Duck Starter and not Chicken Starter or other bird foods.  Duck Starter does not have anything added to it like extra medications, animal byproducts and such.  I buy direct from the feed mill so I get it at a cheap price.  Also Dust Starter is just realy easy to work with.
The Chick in the Brooder
From the time the chick go's into the brooder to the time they have Feathers on their body but before they get feathers on the head i feed them the same crumbed in the blender Duck Starter.
Once feathers start to form on the head I'll drop in some bread crust or lettuce every now and again along with feeding them the Duck Starter.
When the bird is fully covered with feathers including the head I feed them a combo of Wild bird seed (No Sunflower Seeds).  I find finch seed is the most liked by the birds along with full size Duck Starter and a treat now and again of lettuce or bread crust.
