| 1945 Yalta - After the defeat of Nazi Germany, the three big allies met on February 4th until the 11th to discuss the division and governing of postwar Germany (Roosevelt, Churchill, and Stalin) 1947 Truman Doctrine- U.S. President Truman requests $400 million in aid to help fight communism in Greece and Turkey. 1947 Marshall Plan- George Marshall proposed aid to help rebuild Europe. Once approved $13 billion was sent. 1948 Berlin Airlift- On June 24, the Soviet Union attempted to control Berlin by blocking all land access to the country. Throughout the next year the United States and Britain airlifted 1.5 million tons of supplies to residents in Berlin 1950 Korean War- Communist North Korea invades Southern Korea, Truman orders U.S. forces to aid South Korea 1951 Rosenberg Spy Case- Julius Etheal Rosenberg convicted of selling U.S. atomic secrets. Sent to the chair 1952 H-Bomb- Ist explosion on November 1st in the Marshall Islands 1953 Stalin Dies- Stalin Dies of stroke on March 5th 1953 Korean War Ends- peace treaty is signed and the korean war ends 1954 Guatemalan Coup- Guatemalan President Jacob Arbanz Guzman was overthrown 1954 Massive Retaliation- On January 12 Secretary of State John Foster Dulles threatens a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union (against communist agression) 1956 Khrushchev's secret speech- Nikita Krushchev calls for peace between capitalist and communists. 1957 Sputnik- 1st manmade satelite to orbit the earth is launched by the Soviet Union 1959 Castro takes power- Castro overthrows cuban leader Batista 1960 U-2 Affair - American plane shot down by Soviet Union 1961 Bay of Pigs - 1962 Cu?ban Missle Crisis- Soviet Union installs missles in Cuba, capable of reaching the United States. The U.S. makes blockade and the Soviets remove the missles. ??1963 Hot line- United States and Soviet Union instal a direct hotline for quick communication |

| 1963 Profumo Event - John Profumo resigned his position in office in 1963 for proposed involvement with Catherine Keeler, a glamourous model who at the time was sleeping with another man. this man was a naval attache to the Soviet Embassy (Eugene Ivanov). The scandal emerged as it was discovered that the British war minister who was sleeping with a woman who was also sleeping with a man from the soviet side. The major reason for the abominatioin of this scandal is due to the fact that this occured during the time of the Cold War where the British and its Allies were at odds with the Soviet communists. | ||||||||
| 1964 Gulf of Tonkin Resolution- North Vietnamese fire at U.S. ship. President Johnson sends U.S. troops to S. Vietnam to retaliate. 1966 ??Indonesian Coup- 500,000 communists slaughtered over the next two years 1967 Six Day War- Israel attacks Egypt and gets Sinai and Gaza strip. Soviet Union accuses the United States of encouraging. 1968 Text Offense- North Vietnam vs. South Vietnam 1968 Prague Spring- The Soviet Union and the warsaw pact leaders invade chezoslavakia 1969 Vietnamization- designed by Richard Nixon to withdraw U.S. ground forces from Vietnam. Turned over to South Vietnam. 1983 Star Wars- Reagan outlines strategic defense. A space based defensive shield that uses lasors and such to destroy attacking missles above earths surface. S.U. accuse of violating 1972 antiballistic missle treaty |

| 1985 Gobachev comes to power- On March 11 Gorbachev comes to power. The Soviet Union experiences economic reforms and greater political treaties 1987 INF- On December 8, Reagan and Gorbachev sign the Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty which mandates the removal of more than 2,600 medium-range nuclear missles from Europe. 1989 Berlin Wall Falls- On November 9 the Berlin Wall Fell seperating East and West Germans. Gorbachev renounces the Brezbrev Doctrine which pledged to use Soviet Union forces to protect its interests in Eastern Europe??? 1990 German Unification- On September 12 the United States, Soviet Union, Great Britain, France, East Germany, and West Germany agreed to end allied occupation rights in Germany. On October 3rd, East and West Germany Unite. 1991 Soviet Collapses- Gorbachev "ousted" by a coup, Russia takes over and Gorbachev resigns. The Soviet Union dissolves. |
