LEADERS OF GREAT BRITAIN
1945 to 1990
Clement Atlee ruled from 1945 until 1951. Due to the war, these elections were the first held in ten years.  Atlee was associated with the labour party.  During his rule Nato was established. Some other events that took place included yalta, the iron curtain, the trumane doctrine, the marshal plan, and the berlin airlift.
Sir Winston Churchill was the next ruler after Atlee. He ruled from 1951 until 1955.  Churchill was associated with the conservative party. During his rule he had to deal with many challenges concerning foreign affairs.  The korean war broke out during this time in which Great Britain attributed itself with the United Nations side of the war. Some other events that occured included the Rosenberg Spy Case, the death of Stalin, and the end of the Korean war.
Anthony Eden was a ruler of Great Britain from 1955 until he resigned in 1957.  Much like Churchill Eden had many struggles with foreign affairs. He too was associated with the conservative party. Some events that took place during his rule included Krushchev's speech and the launching of Sputnik.
Harold Macmillan ruled from 1957 until 1963.  He too was associated with the conservative party.  He began his rule after the resignation of Anthony Eden.  His rule brought a short lived economic boom due to his work with economic and foreign affairs.  During Macmillan's rule some events that took place included Castro taking power, the U-2 Affair, the bay of pigs, the berlin wall, the cuban missle crisis, and the hot line.
Sir Alec Douglas-Home ruled from 1963 until 1964.  He was associated with the conservatives.  During his short time in office a shocking event occured. This was the scandal of the Profumo Event (see timeline).
Harold Wilson ruled from 1964 to 1970 and again from 1974 until he resigned in 1976.  Wilson was an advocate for the labour party.  During his time in office he renationalized the steel industry and the country continued to undergo economic trouble.  Some events that took place during his rule were the indonesian coup, the six day war, text offense, Prague Spring, Vietnamization, and SALT.  Wilson "unexpectedly" resigned in 1976.
Edward Heath ruled from 1970 until 1974 between the rulings of Harold Wilson.  Heath was a conservative. At the end of his rule Britain was at a state of its worst economic status since World War II.  During Heath's rule some events that took place included the Vietnam war agreement and Nixon visiting China.
James Callaghan ruled from 1976 until 1979.  Callaghan was associated with the Labour party.  Similarl to Wilson, Callaghan attempted to solve the economic problems as well as the problems with the industrial workers. He too was unsuccessful in resolving the disagreements.
Margaret Thatcher ruled from 1979 until 1990.  During her long period in rule she brought the conservatives back to power.  She also managed during this time to pacify the union and industrial workers.  While Thatcher was in rule some events that occured included Star Wars, Gorbachev coming to power, INF, the Berlin Wall falls, German Unification, and the collapse of the Soviet Union.
