1999 had been a fruitful year for our unit. We participated and did well in many Inter-unit competitions and to cap it all we received the Most Improved Unit Award at the end of that year. This was indeed a morale booster as we begin the new millenium.

The year 2000 started with a quite a few major changes and new challenges. Cadets from the former Mei Chin NPCC unit were added to the unit after the merger of the two schools. On top of that, the NPCC unit from Buona Vista also merged with our unit ahead of the merger of the two schools. So our unit faced the challenge of integrating and assimilating cadets from the three different schools. On top of that, we also recruited more than 30 new cadets from Secondary One. This boosted the total strength of the unit to more than 140 cadets.

Beside these, there are also quite a few new faces in the leadership team : a teacher-officer, W/Insp Lum May Leng from Mei Chin NPCC unit joined the unit, Honorary Officer, H/Insp Goh Kia Hoe and Honorary Instr Jeffrey Sim, both very experienced ex-Buona Vista cadets who joined in to assist in the training programme for the unit. Our very own ex-cadet, WCI Lee Qing Yu continued to serve in the unit while CI Samuel Lim who had just completed his CI course at the end of last year began serving in the unit. We extend a warm welcome to all of them to our NPCC family.

In keeping with our unit's aim to provide cadets with opportunities to develop leadership qualities, strong character, and civic, social and moral values, we not only provided an exciting varied training programme at the unit level, we also participated actively in most of the activities organised by HQ NPCC.

In February, we sent in a Boys' Team and a Girls' Team for the Inter-unit Campcraft Competition. The teams practised very hard and put in lots of effort in the competition. They gained lots of experience and learnt about teamwork even though they did not win any honours. In April, our girls participated in the Inter-unit Netball Tournament organised by Woodlands Sec. Despite the fierce competition with almost thirty teams, our Girls' Team emerged third Runner-up.

In June, some of our boys participated in the Inter-unit Shooting Competition and Bowling Compeition. They entered into finals as one of the top three teams but were unfortunate to be placed 10th during the finals. In the Bowling Competition, the boys succumbed to the fierce challenge by teams from other school and could not retain the championship that they won last year. However, our officer, Mr Ivan Ho out bowled the rest of the officers and CIs and clinched the Officer's Category Individual Champion. Well done, Mr Ho!

In August, our boys also participated in the Inter-unit Futsal Competition and the Intra-Area 7-A-side Soccer Tournament organised by our own unit. We clinched the 1st Runner-up in the latter after an exciting final with New Town Sec. Our unit is also planning to organise an Inter-uniform Group Games Day after the Final Term Exams.

Two of the Sec 4 cadets, Goh LiQiang and Regina Lu XuePing participated in the NPCC Day Parade and collected the Most Improved Unit Proficiency Award on behalf of the unit.

In order to provide cadets with exposure to the function and duties of Singapore Police Force, there were visits to various Police Departments such as Public Affairs Department, Police Dog Unit, CID and Police Coast Guard. More than 30 cadets were sent for each of the courses organised by HQ NPCC such as Police Knowledge Course in September and SANA Course, Mentor's Scheme Course in June. Four of our best Sec 3 cadets were also sent for Leadership and Supervisory Course in June. A few Sec 2 and 3 cadets were also picked for the Sailing Proficiency Course and the Life-Saving Course.

The cadets also actively performed various duties in school and outside school, e.g. NKF donation drive, Traffic Marshal at Safety Park, Sports Day yeomen service and Police Week coupon selling. The unit was also invited to sent cadets to perform Marshal Duties at Walkathons conducted by two Community Centres: Alexandra CC (Sec 1) and Queenstown CC (Sec 2). Many exciting outdoor activities were also organised for the cadets, e.g. Adventure Training Camp for Sec 2 (November) and 3 cadets (June) , Sec One Camp (July) and Bukit Timah Reserve Hiking (August). Three Sec 3 cadets were also sent to participate in the National Camp organised by the HQ. Our Sec 3 cadets also participated in the President's Challenge Walkathon in September.

For the 1st time, there were also educational tours organised by the unit to increase the perspective of the cadets beyond what they learnt during weekly training. They went to the National Museum in August to gain more understanding of Singapore's History. An overseas tour to Malacca during School Holidays in November is also in the pipeline.

2000 looked set to be another challenging and fruitful year for the unit and we will continue to strive hard to achieve an even higher level of excellence. 1
