Tournament Report

Sunday 8th February The Queen's Park Sevens at Barlia Sports Centre, Castlemilk

For the second year in a row we organised a small sevens competition with five teams taking part.

The format was that every team would play each other over the full length of the pitch (not good news for our unfit fatties).

The teams taking part were QP A, QP B, Coasters, Motherwell Dossers and Golds Solicitors.

Unfortunately we only had an hour and a half booking so the games didn't last that long.

It was a bright and sunny day in Castlemilk for a change and it was good to see Coasters, the holders from Oban, there in large numbers and on time.

We had two teams taking part but unfortunately only twelve players turned up, although we also had Barry playing for Golds, and we lined up as follows:-

QP A: James McLaughlin, Roddy Davidson, Stephen Din, Paul Stormonth, John Kirkland and Gordon Swinburne.

QP B: John Crosbie, Colin Shepherd, Alan Main, Stuart McKinven, Arthur McCue, Iain Campbell and John Scott (guesting from Coasters).

Coasters were the favourites for the tourney and they proved they were the best team by winning three of their games comfortably and only dropping one point against QP B.

They also didn't concede a goal in the tourney which keeper Mugsi MacGregor was delighted to tell everybody about.

He actually stated that he'd never had four shut outs in a row before which surprised no one that had ever seen him play in goals.

Mind you he should have lost a goal to Jazza in the last game against QP A. Our big, burly striker ran from his own half, shrugged off one challenge (the poor guy bounced off him) then nutmegged another defender before hitting the ball straight at Mugsi with the goal gaping.

Jazza proceeded to collapse at this point and it took twenty players and a hoist to get him back to his feet.

The young (apart from Barry) Golds side had a good tournament and finished second on goals scored mainly due to a 3-0 gubbing of the Dossers.

Our QP A were third after two wins, one against QP B and the other in the very last game against Golds.

The B Team were next with four points thanks to a draw with Coasters and a win against Motherwell which was also the Cooper Cup game.

Queen's won 2-0 and regained the Cooper Cup thanks to goals from Arthur and Crossers, who was actually playing in goals at the time but ran the length of the pitch to score !

The wooden spoonists were Motherwell who did manage to beat QP A with a solitary goal from Alan the Wee Man but the big pitch, lack of fitness, lack of ability and Jaffa in goals were too much of a handicap for them.

The results were:
QP A 1  (Roddy) QP B 0
Coasters 2 Golds 0
Motherwell 0 Coasters 3
QP B 0 Golds 1
QP A 0 Motherwell 1
QP B 0 Coasters 0
Golds 3 Motherwell 0
Coasters 2 QP A 0
QP B 2 (Crossers, Arthur) Motherwell 0
Golds 1 QP A 2 (Jazza, Big John)

FInal Table
Coasters 10 points
Golds 6 points (5 goals)
QP A 6 points (3 goals)
QP B 4 points
Motherwell 3 points

After the football was finished we retired to the Mire Bar in Aikenhead Road for hospitality and light refreshments and, in a low key affair, Steven MacIntyre of Coasters received the QP Sevens trophy and the Quiz Trophy which Coasters also won.

Afterwards Coasters made their way to the Park Bar in Argyle Street for some more refreshments and Crossers, Jazza and Mister Campbell were forced to keep them company until they made their way home after 9pm.

All in all it was a good day enjoyed by those that took part and hopefully if we run it again the football might last a wee bit longer.

A big thank you to all who took part.
