November 30th, 2005 Quilchena PAC Meeting

 

 

1.               Opening Remarks

Barbara G, PAC Chair, called the meeting to order at approximately 7:10 p.m.

 

2.               Agenda and Minutes

The Agenda was distributed at the meeting.  A copy of the agenda is attached to these Minutes in Appendix 1.

3.               Chair Report (Barbara G)

 

a) Safety: Safe Arrival Program- Announced that safe arrival program will run and that enough volunteers had been found to go forward.

 

b). Kindergarten and New Parent Orientation; Shareen D, Barb G and Val P. will be hosting a orientation meeting on Friday Dec 2/05 for all new parents to the school in order help them get familiar with the school PAC, school grounds, staff and answer any questions they may have.

 

c) Book Fair:  This year’s book fair was another great success and helped to raise considerable funds for the library and books for each classroom. Total sales exceeded $8,000 of which over $3,000 will come back to Quilchena in books and products.

 

D) Speakers Series: On Nov 24th Quilchena was fortunate to have Dr. Judy Anderson provide the first of our Speaker Series presentation “Parent s Tool Box”. Various schools across the province are currently utilizing these tools and incorporating them into their daily school routine. For further information you can access www.realrestitution.com.

 

e) Notice was provided that Quichena School would be collecting for the Christmas Food Bank Hampers and that donations would be collected until Dec. 9th. Clothing donations would go to a local Women’s Shelter.

 

f) DPAC and BCCPAC. Both of these organizations are looking for parent volunteers to serve on a number of different committees. Sometimes these committees are specific to each of these organizations, but more often they are committees that the VSB or Ministry of Education represent. Committees meet on different topic and at different times. If you are interested in volunteering please speak to Barb G. and she can connect you with the correct person.

 

g) Provincial Class Size Information Packages were released for 2005 and copies are available from Barb G.

 

 h) Healthy Lunch Initiatives – federal guidelines were released by the ministry recently to help schools make proactive healthy changes to Lunch and snack choices in the school. New York Food Services, which provides the weekly lunch program at Quichena, has made numerous changes to reflect these guidelines.

 

i) Artist in Residence; On Nov. 29th and 30th and Dec 6th all of the Grade 1,3 and Grade 4 French students participated in a printmaking workshop. Marta Robertson Smyth, a local Vancouver artist came to the school to work with the students making gifts that they could take home for the holidays. This was a PAC sponsored event, which was greatly enjoyed by all.

 

 

 

4.               Principal’s Report- Val Coppersmith

A)    The Christmas concert will take place Wednesday Dec 14th at 6:45 pm

Dress rehearsal will take place on Tuesday Dec 13th2 @9:00

 

b) Senior Volleyball has wrapped up another successful season. Senior Basketball will be starting in the near future.

 

c)     The primary singlets have been ordered in a Brilliant Blue colour with the “Q” logo on them.

 

d)     Report cards will be going out with the children on Dec 5th.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 5         Teachers’ Report – Gail Ballantyne

 

Teaches wished to thanks the parents for their support of both the Annual Book Fair and the Annual Quilchena Appeal.   

 

6.         Treasurer’s Report – Jean  Allen

 

Motion Raised by Jean A. to release interim funds to the Principal and teachers for immediate distribution.

 

Noted that the annual school budget is $22,000/ year. Reviewed Treasures Report which includes Statement of Revenues and Expenditures to Aug. 31/05 Report attached to back of Minutes.

 

Motion to Accept Interim funds distribution.

7.           Traffic and Safety- Shereen D

 

Meeting held with Dave Kim of the Neighbourhood Transportation Branch, Vancouver City Hall. Discussed ways of creating a safer neighbourhood with regards to traffic flow. He clarified that there would not be any changes to parking regulations along school boundaries. Recommends that school manage traffic enforcement daily. Parents disagreed with this option. Dave also stated that he would sent By-law around more regularily to ticket. Suggested that parents call City enforcement phone number when then see problems. Also suggested that PAC or school invite VPD office to school assembly to talk with kids about traffic regulations.

 

 

8.           Fundraising Update

Heather K reported that as of this meeting 32% of the schools families had participated in the AQA with $14,000 already being raised to date. Letters have gone out to student members in all languages

 

9.            Library Report

The PAC is suggesting that funds raised, though the AQA, be utilized in a School Library Upgrade Project. To support this, a survey is going out to teachers to get their input on what needs to be included. Issues to be reviewed are physical changes, network requirement, soft cost, etc.

Once final AQA funds are tallied a committee will be formed in the New Year to review the survey result and begin looking into feasible options.
