After
Millennium Dreamers
in May 2000, the school student council was asked to consider doing
something like bake sales to help a global charity (the school already
helps local charities through the PAC Single Parent Food Bank Appeal
and the PAC Twin School Project). Also, thinking globally was
a good fit with the introduction of the Internet on classroom computers.
The student council has decided to do a fundraiser for a charity
that raises money to help build water wells in Uganda. The charity is
called CPAR (Canadian Physicians
for Aid and Relief). They are like Doctors Without Borders, except Doctors
Without Borders tend to go and help after a crisis, while CPAR tend to
try and do things like the water wells for healthier water to avoid a
health crisis. As the fundraiser, the student council has decided to
try something done at another school called Pennies From The Heart, where
every day for a week the student council arrange for a jar to be taken
around to all the classes to collect small change from the students. The
student council has decided to begin this project in March 2001.
In April 2001 the student
council's Pennies From The Heart program raised over $500.00 to help
CPAR build a water well in Uganda.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police's National Youth Strategy
has evolved considerably from the original basic goals of reducing
youth
crime and victimization. One of the strategy's initiatives,
deal.org (Delivering Education and Awareness for Life), has grown
well
beyond its original focus, when it was created in 1998, of
fostering drug awareness among Canadian youth. It has evolved into
a
comprehensive Internet resource, including pages for parents
and teachers. Deal.org aims to empower youth by providing an interactive
forum to communicate, research and express ideas. Young people
from across Canada and around the world can connect to one another,
tell the world what they're doing and get involved in their
own communities. The French version of deal.org is choix.org
