Production Report/Critical Evaluation of Moving Image Sequence: "Molly" Back to Visual Comm Page
Our moving image sequence (please refer to storyboard) tells the story of how a psychologist tries investigate the case of a child molest by creating the conditions for the child to reenact the scene through the use of dolls.

Generally, our group (myself, Meiyin and Ailian) were trying to create a sense of suspense as to what the scene was actually depicting, only revealing it at the end with the close up of the dolls, the child's scream and the psychologist's report.

The story/video flowed quite well, but could probably have done with better and longer transitions between each scene. The technical aspects such as lighting could have been improved on, perhaps by using more gain, a better lamp to generate stronger and brighter edges, a kind of "floodlight" effect. That was the initial intention but unfortunately we were not able to achieve the desired effect.

Better use and linkage could also have been made with the child, and perhaps capture more of her emotions and expressions, especially after the scream. Some shots were also perhaps too short, and the limitations of time meant that there was little left to build up the atmosphere and to suspend the audience, which would have helped to tell a better story.

The ending was perhaps a little hollow and there could perhaps have been less camera movement on the closing of the file.

Still, given the apparent flaws and improvements that can be made, I felt that there was a genuine attempt to combine the elements of visual communication, such as shot composition, lighting, variety of shots and sound, and perhaps we were limited somewhat by our lack of experience in working with the dvcam, which in turn limited the technical aspects that we were trying to achieve but were not able to.
