Steve McManaman's double strike in the 1995 Coca-Cola League Cup Final against Bolton Wanderers,
one of the rare trophies that
Liverpool picked up during
the lean 90s. The final was at
Wembley and Macca fittingly
won the man of the match
award named after legendary
winger Sir Stanley Matthews.
Greatest Memories
Back to Mighty Reds Corner
This is a page where I hope to share some of my favourite Liverpool memories...
3-3 draw with Manchester United in season 1993/94, recovering from an early 0-3 deficit to
draw level with 2 goals from Nigel
Clough, and a second half header from
Neil Ruddock (can still remember him
bravely going in for the header that
seemed to "blind" him temporarily, or
was it the roar of the KOP?). One of the classic games of the 90s.
The original 4-3 Liverpool-Newcastle thriller on 3 April 1996 with
Stan Collymore scoring the
winner in injury time after
brilliant interplay between Ian
Rush and John Barnes.
Liverpool thumping Crystal Palace 9-0 in 1990 on their way to the last (for now) of their 18 League Championships. Featured a penalty by a
certain John Aldridge, who came on as a
substitute in his last game before leaving the
club for Real Sociedad.
14th May 1995, Liverpool 2 Blackburn 1. One of the rare times when many Liverpool fans couldn't decide who to cheer for. The last day of the season featured the visit of the eventual league champions Blackburn Rovers, under former Liverpool favourite and manager Kenny Dalglish. A come from behind win from Liverpool earned from a free-kick goal from Jamie Redknapp that nearly handed the title to a certain team called Manchester United.
March 10, 1997. The second instalment of the 4-3 Liverpool-Newcastle thriller. This time,
a winner in stoppage time from Robbie
Fowler-header settled the game in
Liverpool's favour, and came after
Liverpool had squandered a 3-0 halftime
lead.
Owen's double strike against Arsenal in the 2001 FA Cup Final. Henchoz's handball clearances were another highlight (always wonder and am amazed at how often he gets away with them).
The 5-4 golden goal win over Alaves in the 2001 Uefa Cup Final.
The Kop's last stand in 1994. Even a 0-1 defeat against Norwich City (a goal by Jeremy Goss) will not take away the emotions of the day.
A 3-2 derby victory over Everton in the 1989 FA Cup Final, with an early John Aldridge goal and a double
strike in extra-time from Ian
Rush. Another emotional
occasion as it was the same
FA Cup run that saw the
Hillsborough tragedy occur.
A memory I would much rather forget, but probably never will, a 0-2 defeat by Arsenal on the last day of the season at Anfield that saw Liverpool pipped by the gunners to the league title. Again, the same year as the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, an emotional roller-coaster ride for a 9 year-old me at the time. The famous commentary words "it's up for grabs now" as Arsenal's Michael Thomas (who ironically later signed for Liverpool) somehow broke through and scored will always remain in my mind, and some Liverpool fans might also still insist that Alan Smith's first half goal was handled and should never have been allowed.
