The Queensland Palmistry Guild was established in 1978 by Andrew Fitzherbert. It exists for palmists who are interested in contact with other palmists, the promotion of palmistry and the development of expertise and research in hand reading. Members are basically focussed on the exchange of ideas, the study of palmistry and general good fellowship. The Guild has a loose organisation and the present convenor is Colin Phillips. Guild members are generally engaged in professional palmistry in private consultation, and in work at public places such as markets, fairs, and restaurants. Some members offer courses on palmistry. If you are a palmist we can offer you fellowship and assistance in professional development. We may also be able to help you find some work if you need it. If you are not a palmist and would like to have a reading or to learn more about palmistry we can help. You could talk with us or maybe come to one of our classes or visit one of our monthly meetings in Brisbane. For a palm reading see the our member's page. Mostly we read palms directly but if that's not possible some of us are happy to work from prints, photocopies or photographs. Photocopies usually don’t contain sufficient information for a detailed hand reading and they can be misleading. By far it's best to read a real hand. Meetings are held in Brisbane, at Wooloongabba, on the last Wednesday evening of the month. The usual format is news, a short quiz, an address from a member or guest, discussion and a cuppa. Another group activity is participation at Medieval and other Fairs. Lloyd Hamilton is currently conducting Brisbane classes at Indooroopilly for the University of the Third Age, and Patti Barton offers courses in the Tweed region of northern NSW. Groups such as Rotary (Inner Wheel) and Probus sometimes request addresses on palmistry. All members agree to follow a formal code of ethics which respects palmistry clients and their welfare. Predictions of dire events are not permitted because of the psychological harm they may cause. Full membership requires attendance and participation in at least six formal meetings per year. Full members must have attended an approved course, or demonstrated satisfactory skills in practice, or pass an examination. They are also expected to have a collection of original palm prints. Associate members must have an interest in and some basic knowledge of hand reading. Visitors are welcome provided they have a genuine interest in palmistry and are not just looking for a palm reading. Prospective members are especially welcome. The Guild owns a fine medieval tent for use at Medieval Fairs. We have a modest bank account and charge members a small membership fee. Sometimes the fees are paid out of earnings at Fairs. One of the members kindly allows us to hold meetings at his home which is conveniently located near the city. Others store the Guild’s equipment and books. Our web site was posted in late 2007 so most of the fairs are over for this year. Members’ classes and public talks are continuing. Dianne McInnes’ book on Andrew Fitzherbert is currently being reviewed by prospective publishers. The Guild does not currently publish a journal although Andrew Fitzherbert has run one in the past. It is hoped that this web site will provide a place for publishing articles of interest. The favoured books on palmistry used by Guild members are "Hand Psychology" by Andrew Fitzherbert and "The Graven Palm" by Mrs Robinson.
