Meredith Bryant

I have just completed my final year in a Diploma of Fine Art at Brisbane Institute of TAFE, Hamilton. During this time I have held several exhibitions: Tempo Cafe West End, The Sugar Bar - Market St the City, Fat Boys Cafe Fortitude Valley, Verve Café and Bar at Metro Arts, Urban Grind in West End.

In the last 2 years, I have discovered what art really is to me. It's a way to reveal who I am, what concerns me and what I find special about life. Much of the time whilst making my art I am drawn to an environment that puts all of my thoughts and feelings into physical form. What I hope to gain from making my art is to touch a higher consciousness or a wider soul within the world. Whilst also making people happy I would like to get them thinking about what we are here for, and what we have the power to do, or change because sometimes I find that the society that we live in could be more positive and more spiritually enlightened. I see my art as something very personal but I hope that people can be touched and relate to it at the same time.

In the future I hope to continue to develop my art, not only conceptually but also in the way that I present my messages. I hope to experiment with new media and move from predictive means of presenting an idea. Art Therapy is also something that inspires me, because I see art as a powerful tool of communication and a way of delving into the subconscious, to reveal ones true self, and I would really like to simply help people.

Artists Statement

As an artist I am trying to express the rawness of the human experience, the good the bad, the beautiful and the suffering. Within my practise I am trying to reveal what I believe to be the truth. With a diversity of medias, I use art to communicate my feelings toward relevant issues ie. Politics, Spirituality, Religion, Compassion, Love, Beauty and Femininity. Trying to define who I am in an ever-evolving society. To gather information and inspiration I look to such artists as Alex Grey and Kathe Kollowitz. To gather symbols and motifs I look toward religions like Buddhism, and Hinduism, Ancient Goddesses these also prove to be a great source of inspiration for me. As an artist I feel connected to a greater soul within the world, and have strong feelings toward those who suffer within society, I use my art to express these concerns, beliefs and feelings-, but I also yearn to celebrate the special and precious. I hope to relate, educate, and awaken people. Art helps one define who they are within the world, art to me is the most powerful tool of communication, art helps me grow and become the person I want to be, I see it as my voice. The process of creating my work is just as important as the outcome, I choose to do minimal preliminary pieces, I prefer to allow chance and serendipity – to evolve with media. Working intuitively is what intrigues me. The process of creating is uninhibited by intellect, or over analytical thoughts, the outcome is something experimental, subjective and personal.
